- Vernetta Lee Bogart (Bowen), age 67, from Appleton, Wisconsin has gone on to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on December 7, 2007, after a 10 and half year battle with renal disease. Vernetta was a simple woman with simple desires. A loving devoted mother and grandmother. Her strength of character and feisty disposition will always be remembered by those who knew and loved her. Her hands created crocheted and knitted masterpieces. Treasured reminders of how Christ delicately knits together a human heart, mind and body. These lasting reminders will always be on our hearts in the days and weeks to come.
Vernetta is survived by her sister, Betty Lou Reynolds and husband, Charles of WA, daughter Angel Chamberlin of OH; son Robert Bogart, Jr. of CA; daughter April Schein and husband, Thomas, of WI; daughter Amber Townes and husband, Gerald, of MI; son Randall Bogart and wife, Joanna, of OH; and six grandchildren, Cade and Aurora; Brogan and Abrielle; Brittany and Blake Townes. A special family friend "adopted" as a son Ronald Ketchum and wife, Melissa, and their children Jacob and Claire of CA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her young son, Richard Bogart.
A private memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Chapel. Following the service a memorial lunch will be served at 11 a.m. at The Vineyard located at 3301 W. Prospect Avenue, Appleton, WI 54914. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name at Appanasha Pet Clinic, 1160 Appleton Road Menasha, WI 54952.
Vernetta Bogart. The name Vernetta is Latin in origin and means "Spring Green." A new beginning. An uncommon name for an uncommon woman. Born on October 15th, 1940, as Vernetta Bowen in Santa Ana, California, her look and demeanor perfectly fit the mold of "California Girl." Her long beautiful blonde hair would flow gracefully in the warm southern wind. Smooth, silky fair skin and a magnificent smile. She and her sister Betty would often get into a bit of fun loving trouble from time to time. A daddy's girl none-the-less. Her nickname "Little Doll." She was a kind of flower child but was grown up at the same time. Her sense of humor would make even the most serious persons face reveal its hidden smile.
Vernetta married and began raising 6 beautiful children. That's right 6!!! Three girls and 3 boys. In 1971, she and her husband moved the family to Pennsylvania where hilly farmland replaced the scenic beauty and comfort that California had provided her during her young life. Vernetta was uncommonly brave when she unselfishly sacrificed her past for an uncertain future in a new land that she hoped would be better for all. During this period, Vernetta discovered many of the talents that she is now best known for — including:
Making delicious baked goods, Sewing, Embroidery and mending clothes, Canning, Knitting, Crocheting.
As time passed though, the toil and dangers required of farming the land along with other outside factors placed a heavy toll on the family and regrettably divorce ensued. The price was too high for anyone to bear and as a result the family endured very hard times physically, financially and emotionally. Once again Vernetta would call upon her uncommon courage and strength to start over again. With another leap of faith she returned to California to rebuild her life. There she found employment in the accounting field and worked hard to support herself, her children and her pets. California had changed though and over time she began to hope for a better life elsewhere. It was during this time that she was stricken with renal disease. She endured several serious procedures including a kidney transplant. Despite this ongoing hardship, she remained as determined as ever to move forward. Her character, strength and the will of God helped her survive despite unlikely odds. We saw many manifestations of Christ's loving imprint on a life marred with scars and disappointments. In time, she made her way to the beautiful Spring Green fields of Wisconsin where she spent time enjoying family, the seasons and the independence that she had always seemed to crave. Enjoying Saturday morning breakfasts at the local diner, the companionship Cujo and Skeeter, her beloved dogs, shopping trips and spending time playing Legos and dolls with her grandchildren. During this time Vernetta's children were becoming independent too and successful in their own lives. In her own way, whether we want to admit it or not, our mother has greatly influenced the people we have grown to become. She has contributed positively to our lives in countless ways. A common trait among her children is our uncanny ability to defend ourselves. Without question Vernetta was proud of all of her children and would seize any chance she could to tell others of their success. Because of this, I think she felt a bit proud of herself too, as she should.
Ultimately, she knew 6 wonderful grandchildren. All of whom will miss her greatly. They will carry on her legacy for generations to come. They represent another "new beginning" or Green Spring for their grandmother and I am sure they will continue to make her proud. We will all miss Vernetta because she was an uncommonly special person, she was our Mother, our teacher and our biggest fan. We will remember her always.
