  • Notes  Family History Document (Family):
    • Martinus Wilhelmus Hanegraaf
Martin Hanegraaf was born in 1896, the third child of Adriannus Hanegraaf and Hendrika Van Gestel. In 1905, at age nine, Martin and his family moved from Helmond to S'Hertogenbosh. Martin already had seven grades behind him in schooling, for students were graduated three times every two years. He continued his schooling in S'Hertogenbosh to the eleventh grade.

On October 23, 1909, Martin, along with his mother, brothers and sisters, left Holland to join his father in America. They traveled on river speedboat from S'Hertogenbosh to Rotterdam, where they boarded the SS Potsdam and sailed to Cherbourgh, France and then on to New York. They traveled by train from New York to Chicago, and changed trains for the final leg of the journey to Little Chute, Wisconsin.

Mart and his brother, Casey, joined the Kimberly Band shortly after arriving in America. Martin was the drum major of the band from 1926 until 1941. World War I started in 1914, when Martin was 18 years old. On September 15, 1917, at age 21, Martin joined the army as a corporal in Infantry Company B at Camp Grant in Illinois. He was discharged on January 14, 1919.

Late in 1916, Martin met Catherine (Kate) Hartjes through his brother, Casey, who was dating her at the time. Mart and Kate dated for a number of months. Then Kate, still not certain if she wanted to marry or join the convent, "gave him the door". After two months, Kate wrote a note to Mart asking him if he still cared. He did not wait long to ask her out again. They were married 13 months later, on May 13, 1919.

One of the earliest memories I have of Mama is that of her seated at an upright piano in our parlor. The keys were yellowish with age but the sounds that emanated from that grand old instrument were music to my ears.

In those days, Mama was inundated with cooking, washing, ironing, babies and the care of three men (Papa and her two single brothers), but she still found time to play that old fashioned piano. And play it she did. Lovely classical tunes, marches and lullabies flowed melodically through our home and most regularly on Sundays, a day my parents thoroughly respected as a day of rest. On occasion, Papa would join in on his trombone and Uncle Greg on the trumpet. Sometimes, in the evening, the men would carefully roll the piano outside onto our large front porch and soon neighbors would join in a sing-a-long.

Once a month Mama would take a bus into Appleton to do some purchasing that couldn't be done in Kimberly. On those occasions, she would take one of us kids along. By taking a menace out of the house, it would mean peace for those left behind. It was my brother, Bud, or I who went on those shopping sprees most often. Mama always kept things fair by bringing small trinkets home for the six remaining siblings.

Just by closing my eyes, I can smell the many loaves of bread Mama pulled from the kerosene oven. An after school treat for me was the buttery crust from one of those steaming loaves.

Mama believed cleanliness was next to Godliness, especially on her two laundry days. On the eve of those days, she would fill the boiler with water and clothes, then set it over two low burners in the basement. In the morning the clothes would be put in the washing machine. The lye that went into her homemade soap assured Mama that the wash would come clean. Mama hung the laundry outside on a metal clothesline, no matter what the weather, but first it was sorted by size and color.
I remember how Mama often chided me when I spoke uncharitably. Idle gossip was never her forte and, most of all, I remember Mama for that.
