| 18. | Immigration - Passengers on the America | Immigration - Passengers on the America
Departed Rotterdam Arrived Philadephia on 5/8/1848. NEED HELP TO CONFIRM AND IDENTIFY THE FEW REMAINING PERSONS. The "America" was termed a "Hambro Barque" which might refer to the company that made the bark or barque. The crew was under the leadership of Captain M. Haushele. A priest by the name of Father van der Poel was one of the ninety four passengers aboard. John Coenen, the son of Theodore Coenen and Johanna van den Berg wrote this account. He was fourteen years old at the time he journeyed with his family to America. About 1848, seeing that his children could have better opportunities in the United States, Theodore Coenen sold his little property in Boekel and sailed with his family from Rotterdam in a vessel bound for Philadelphia. They landed in that city after a voyage of 48 days and then their destination being in Brown County, Wisconsin, proceeded at once by rail to Albany, New York, thence via the Erie Canal to Buffalo, New York, and from there by the old steamer "Michigan" to Green Bay, Wisconsin where they landed in early June of 1848. |

| 20. | Immigration - Passengers on the Maria Magdelena | Immigration - Passengers on the Maria Magdelena
Departed Rotterdam approx. March 25th Arrived New York May 8th 1848. Most went onto Little Chute arriving there June 10, 1848. NEED HELP TO CONFIRM AND IDENTIFY THE FEW REMAINING PERSONS. 1848 The following written by J.C. van Neil NOTE - This family was part of the group of the first families to settle in the Kaukauna, Hollandtown and Little Chute area of Wisconsin. The bark "Maria Magdelena" carried 369 tons and one hundred and forty seven passengers under the direction of Captain D. Smit. The following letter from passenger J.C. van Niel informs us about part of that voyage. On March 29, 1848, we sailed from Rotterdam to Hellevoetsluis where we waited for favorable winds which came on the 25th. Father Heinige from Amsterdam left us in the morning and by mid-afternoon we took off for the deep sea. Then followed the never-forgotten song led by the Gerrits and Lochmans, "Farewell to all of you for today we have to say goodbye." Everyone seemed to join into the song even those in a mood of sadness and comtemplation. One day the bureau of Miss Lochman was placed in back of the ship and Father Van Den Broek used it for an altar for daily Mass. In stormy weather he gave Jan Wigman permission to hold the chalice. Every evening all joined in the rosary and sang the "Salve Regina" before retiring. One of the families, a man and a woman and their two year old son, cried and complained so bitterly that the captain felt compelled to give them one of the life boats to return after two days at sea. No one knows wether they made it back safely or not. From New York we took a steamboat to Albany and from Albany to Buffalo on a canal boat. In Buffalo, Father Van Den Broek quarrelled with the captain who wanted a second payment to continue onward. We travelled on to mackinac and from there we transferred to little ships to Green bay. From there we traveled up the Fox River to Little Chute where we arrived on June 10, 1848, after a sojourn of eighty-three days. |
