  • Notes  News Mention (Family):
    • Woodville Couple is Married Half Century
Chilton - Mr. and Mrs. August Oberthur celebrated their golden wedding at their home in the town of Woodville Sunday. They were married at Hollandtown Oct. 11, 1881, in the same church which they now attend, and they still reside in the same home from which Mrs. Oberthur was married 50 years ago. Of the six children born to Mr. and Mrs. Oberthur, one was killed during the World war. There are 11 grandchildren.
The home is a landmark in Calumet co. It was build by Bernard Fink, father of Mrs. Oberthur, in 1868. He made the brick out of clay on the farm, kiln-dried them and laid them himself. They were modeled after the brick used in Germany and are double the size of ordinary brick used in this country today. The home has been only slightly remodeled since it was built and is still in good condition.
Three brothers, Bernard, Henry and Steven, and one sister, Bardeen Fink, located in Woodville in the summer of 1848 and began to carve a farm out of the heavy timber. Until they built a shanty they slept on brush and one kept guard against wolves and bears while the others slept. There were few whites in the vicinity, the majority of the inhabitants being Indians. They brought with them a few potatoes and some lettuce, which they planted among the trees. Bernard bought some iron some of a wagon from which the woodwork had burned and made from it the first heavy farm wagon, which took the place of wagons made by cutting wheels from logs.
The original homestead of Bernard Fink contained 50 acres of land, which has been increased to 180 acres. The Finks, who immigrated to Boston, Mass, from the Rhine province in Germany, lived in the east before coming to Calumet co to take up homesteads.
Mrs. Bernard Fink came from Bavaria, Germany, in 1854, and for some time lived in Fond du Lac. Then she moved to Menasha, where she met her future husband. Mrs. Oberthur, the only living child of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Fink, is 77 years of age, and Mr. Oberthur is 79. Mr. Oberthur came here in 1880 from Savon, Germany, after serving three years in the German army. He worked for one year as a carpenter before he became a farmer. Both Mr. and Mrs. Oberthur sill enjoy good health and are keenly interested in both local and national affairs.
Out of town persons who attended the golden wedding celebration were: Mr. and Mrs. John Oberthur and family, Barney Oberthur, Miss Lydia Hoffman, Mr. and Mrs. William Anderson, all of Daggett, Mich., Mrs. John Anderson, Thomas Anderson, of Talbot, Mich.; John Anderson of Milwaukee; Miss S. Bromley, Longton, England; Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hauser and family , Appleton; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Mickie and family, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Driessen, Steven Tennesen, all of Kaukauna; Mrs. Bardeen Fink and family, Dundas; Frank Wolfinger and Louis Wolfinger, St. John; Mr. and Mrs. John Brockman, Mr. and Mrs. George Brockman and family, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Brockman and family, De Pere.
Submitter notes: Mrs. August Oberthur was born Sophia Fink, daughter of Bernard Fink and Caroline Noll. August and Sophia were married at St. Francis, Hollandtown. Their son, Henry, died in WW1. Sophia had three sisters: Maria/Mary (Mrs. Nicholas Menten), Wilhelmina (Mrs. Frank Wolfinger) and Catherine (Mrs. John Brockman). The Finks were a Dutch family from the Gelderland province, but lived in Appeldorn, Rhineland for some years before immigrating to the U.S. They shortenend the name from Vinkenvleugel after settling in Calumet County.
