    • From Donna Dibble Lies Family History;Bernard and Katherine were natives of Germany. They moved to this country in the 1850's and settled at Pinnacle Rock outside of Melvina in Monroe County, Wisconsin. The farmed a small track of land until 1863 when Bernard enlisted in the Army to serve in the Civil War. After the war, he returned and bought 300 more acres. He cleared 100 acres for farming. Part of that track is now Pinnacle Rock Pond. The old homestead was moved when the trout pond was created.Bernard was hard working, sociable and good-natured. He and his wife were Catholic and helped build a small church on the present site of Pine Hollow Cemetery. That church was destroyed by a tornado.
(This information found in Sparta Library in the book "History of Monroe County, Wisconsin".Bernard and Catherine Leis were both natives of Germany, came to Ameri ca in the early sixties and located on the ridge in the town of Jefferson. They had a family of five children. When he first settled in Jefferson he purchased a small tract of land and there lived until Sept. 19, 1864, when he enlisted for the service in the Civil War, and with his regiment served in the Army of Tennessee until the close of the war, and with receiving his honorable discharge he returned to the old homestead and purchased 200 acres of wild land and with his own hands cleared and grubbed 100 acres and converted it from a wild state to a highly productive farm. In those early days settlers were few and wild game of bear and deer were plentiful, with Indians roaming over the country. Mr. Leis was a hard working man and always sociable and good-natured and held the confidence and esteem of his acquaintances. His work was considered as good as his bond. He and his wife were both members of the Catholic Church and Mr. Leis assisted in building a little church at the cemetery where they worshipped, which has since been destroyed by a cyclone. He was an advocate of pure democracy and was a loyal supporter of this party, all his life.
Bernard died of myologenous leukemia and was buried at Pine Hollow.
Delia tells that Bernard was named "Lamphere" in Germany. He came over here at the age of 21. He lived with a family named Leis-soon was kno wn as "old Leis's kid". After he was here 50 years, he went back to Germany to visit brothers and sisters there.Delia also told of Anton's Aunt Mary-said she had one tooth-very dirty-spoke no English-married a Leis.
Bernard and Catherine were married on October 16, 1860 in Fussville-Granville in Milwaukee by Pastor Martin Weis
