  The death of Peter Kersten at his home in the town of Brillion on Wednesday, Feb. 7th, brings forcibly to mind of many of us that the pioneer settlers of Calumet County are rapidly passing on and leaving the work which they began to a newer generation. Mr. Kersten has been in excellent health until a week previous to his death when he was stricken with a severe attack of the grippe which he seemed unable to thrown off and a weeks' struggle with the dread disease resulted in this death. Peter Kersten was born in Fransselt, Prussia, Germany, on Oct. 20, 1844. When a boy of eleven, in 1855, he came to this country with his parents, landing in Green Bay and remaining there until the fall of that year when they purchased a tract of land in the town of Woodville, this county. After five years of pioneer farming and clearing the land the father sold their holding and purchased a larger tract in the town of Brillion which until his heath last week has been the home of the deceased. Mr. Kersten had much to do with clearing the homestead, living on it long after his brothers had left and making it one of the ideal farms of Calumet County. He was both popular and prominent in his neighborhood and a well known person throughout the county, representing his town on the county board and showing a deep knowledge of civil affairs, the needs of the people and the advancement of his town and county. He was married Jan. 23, 1872 to Johanna Eiting of West Hollandtown and their home was known for and wife for its hospitality. One of Mr. Kersten's leading characteristics was his attachment to his home and family and it earned for him an equally noteworthy devotion from wife and children. He was generous hearted and never failing when there was sorrow or trouble in the neighborhood and his friend could count on him as being true as steel. His sudden death is deeply mourned wherever he was known. The funeral was held from St. Francis church in Hollandtown, of which he was a member since coming to this country, Solemn Requiem Mass being celebrated by his nephew, Rev. Fr. Theo. Kersten of Meeme, assisted by Rev. Fr. Vande Castle of Wrightstown. He is survived by his widow, five sons, Gerhard, Theodore, William at home, Henry of Brillion and Bernard of Milwaukee, and three daughters, Mrs. John VanVreede, Mrs. Wm. Rolf and Miss Katherine Kertsen of Brillion Town. He is also survived by a brother, Math Kersten of Rudolph, Wood County.
