  See Image Lawrence H. Verhagen "Larry" KaukaunaAge 89, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna. L arry was born in Freedom on October 18, 1911; son of the late Henry and Wi lhelmina (Weyers) Verhagen. He opened the Depot Grocery on Kaukauna's nor th side in 1935. On November 25, 1937, he married Gladys Van De Hey in Wri ghtstown. Near the end of World War II, Larry sold Depot Grocery, and in 1 947 opened Kaukauna's first self-service, cash and carry gorcery store, th en known as Larry's Supermarket. In 1952, the store relocated to Dodge Str eet, where Larry conducted business as Piggly Wiggly until 1971. In 196 4, he opened his Little Chute market and relocated the Kaukauna store to i ts original Crooks Avenue location in 1967. In the mid 1970's, Larry beg an to take some time away from the stores, and retired in 1981. Larry w as a member of the Kaukauna Lions Club, the Elks Lodge, the Serra Club, a nd was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He was proud to have been an origi nal stockholder of the Green Bay Packers. Greenwood; a son-in-law, Robe rt J. Greenwood; sisters: Ceil (Norb) Meulemans and Martha (Ignatius) Schu h; brothers: Ed (Rose) Verhagen and Lloyd (Doris) Verhagen; an infant brot her, Francis Verhagen; and a brother-in-law, Ray Nussbaum.The funeral liturgy will be held at noon on Saturday, May 12, 2001 at S T. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 134 West Ann Street in Kaukauna with Fr. Dav id Schmidt officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Frien ds may call at the funeral home on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. a nd again at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the l iturgy. There will be a parish prayer and scripture service at 7:00 p.m. F riday at the funeral home. A memorial fund in Larry's name has been establ ished.T The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the ent ire staff of St. Paul Elder Services.   60th Anniversary; Gladys and Larry Verhagen, were honored for 60 yea rs of marriage during a Nov. 29 mass at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, foll owed by a family dinner at The Mariner. The former Gladys VandeHey beca me Larrys bride Nov 25, 1937 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Wrightstown. D orothy (VandeHey) Planner, original maid of honor and Lloyd Verhagen, orig inal best man, were present for the anniversary gathering. The Verhagen 's have lived in Kaukauna since marriage. They owned and operated Larry 's Piggly Wiggly stores in Kaukauna and Little Chute. The couple has 8 chi ldren; Patricia Meyers, neenah, Jean Maeder, San Antonio, Kathy Westpha l, Dousman, Tim, Charlotte, NC. , David, DePere, Tom, Joseph and Mary Kna pp all of Kaukauna. There are 31 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
