  DAVID JENNINGS. One of the old and honored residents of New London, who was prominent alike as a business man and as the incumbent of various public offices, was the late David Jennings, whose death occurred December 3,1906. He was one of the earliest settlers of Waupaca County, and had lived in this section of Wisconsin nearly half a century. He was born in Syracuse, New York, November 15, 1836, a son of James and Nancy (Mulroy) Jennings, both of whom were natives of Ireland. James Jennings died at Syracuse, New York. In 1857 his widow with her children moved west to Wisconsin and located in Hortonia Township of Waupaca County. She bought land there, lived with her children until declining years, and then moved to Shawano, where her death occurred. David Jennings was reared and educated at Syracuse, New York, and was twenty-one years of age when he came west to Wisconsin with his mother and other members of the family. He remained on the home farm in Hortonia Township for a short time after his marriage. He married Miss Mary Sullivan. From farming he soon afterwards turned his attention to hotel keeping, and became proprietor of the Jennings House at Northport. In the management of that hotel he was ably assisted by his faithful and industrious, wife. Mr. Jennings took a decided interest in political affairs while at Northport, and for ten years served as chairman of the Democratic County Committee. In 1890 he was elected to the Wisconsin Legislature as representative of his district, and in 1894 he removed his residence to New London. In the same year he was re-elected to the General Assembly. At New London he gave his chief business attention to his large real estate and lumber interests, though much of his time was required for public affairs. He served four terms as mayor of New London, and made that office a medium of effective service and improvement to the entire community. In 1892 he was a democratic presidential elector. Both in business and public affairs he was recognized as a man of the finest integrity and probity, and contributed in large measure to the growth and development of his section of the state. In his death New London lost one of its good and helpful citizens and a faithful member of the Catholic Church. Mrs. David Jennings died April 13, 1900. She was the mother of twelve children. Those still living are John, Frank, Arthur, Raymond, and Elizabeth, all of whom have their home at New London. Those deceased are David, Thomas, Edward, Walter, Richard, James and Simon.
