    • Searching for VOS's or EITING's or TERHARTH's living near (or from) LICHTE NVOORDE, Gelderland, Netherlands, or Bocholt Germany:This August, my wife and I will be spending a couple weeks in the Gelderla nd area of the Netherlands and in Westphalen area of Germany. We are hopi ng to make contact with VOS or EITING family members still living in the r egion that may be related to us.During the mid 1700's and up until 1822, my EITING (EITINK) ancestors liv ed in the small village of Barlo, Westphalen, Germany (a few kmnortheast of Bocholt Germany, and very close to the Netherlands border ). My great great grandfather Johann Wilhelm EITING (born 19March 1767, Barlo, and died Dec 24, 1845, Zieuwent, Gelderland, Netherland s) and his first wife, Johanna Anna D=D6INK (born 6 April 1782= marri ed 12 January 1808, died 3 March 1822, all in Barlo) had a number of child ren there. Johanna Anna died in 1822, and Johann Wilhelm moved across the border to Z ieuwent Netherland (near the larger town of Lichtenvoorde)and married Theo dora (also listed as Derksken or Johanna) VOS (sometimes spelled VOSS?? ). Theodora was born 9 December 1787, married about 1823, and died 18 Janu ary 1844 in Zieuwent. They had two sons, including my great grandfathe r, Antone Herman. Most or all of the children from both families emigrat ed to Boston in 1846, then on to Brown County Wisconsin in 1849.In looking at catholic church and civil records from the region around Zie uwent, I know that the VOS family has deep roots in that area. Ihave not been able to trace my specific ancestors there though (except f or Theodora VOS).Just as an aside, we are aware of another EITING family from Bocholt Germa ny that emigrated to western Ohio and eastern Indiana around 1850. They a re likely related to my EITING family, but we are not yet sure just how.

Hello Cousins, siblings, and other interested parties,I write this to you as an update on additional stuff found on the Eiting/V os family genealogy; and/or to ask your HELP with a remaining mystery. Many of you are descendants of William Eiting, born 1826, and Margaret V en Vertlo.Others of you are descendants of William's full brother Anton, born 182 4, and Anton's first wife Gertrude Micke, or of Anton's second wife Elisab eth Rolf. Both William and Anton, were children of Johann Wilhelm ("Willem") Eitin g, born 1767, Barlo (near Bocholt) Germany, and Willem's second wife Theod ora (Derksken) Vos, born 1787, Zieuwent, Holland. MYSTERY: We know that Willem died the day before Christmas in 1845; a nd I had always assumed Theodora Vos (born 1787) had also died in Holla nd -- before her children and step children started emigrating in 18 46 -- even though we had never found her death record in Holland. We n ow know (based on the following ship log) that she did in fact emigrate ! !! -- when the very first of her children came to America. While in Boston in January of 2003, we found this ship log: On July 21, 1 846, aboard the ship, "Caledonia" from Rotterdam, the following family gro up arrived in the port of Boston:"Etink, widow of Willem, 59, female, Netherlands; Johannes, 32, male, farm er; Elizabeth, 26, female; Wilhelm, 20 male, farmer". Just as side informa tion, the immediately preceeding entry on that same ship log was the Gerr it Jan/Gertrude Vinkenvleugel family (Elizabeth Eiting later married o ne of the Vinkenvleugel children --see attached/enclosed chart of t heir descendants). This is of course Theodora Vos Eiting, and two of Theodora's step childr en Johannes and Elizabeth (whose age is not given quite correctly on the s hip log), and Theodora's youngest son, William. Her other son, Anto n, as well as some of her other stepchildren, Bernard, Henry, & Johanna Ca tharina (married Penterman), emigrated at later dates.***** The MYSTERY: What ever happened in this country to Theodora Vos Eit ing?? Hopefully, some of you have some written record, or tidbit of hand ed down family story -- that just might make sense now that we know she ca me to this country. *****In the Eiting "Journal/Prayer Book" (that has been handed down thru Willi am Eiting's (born 1826) descendants -- the journal that Betty Lou Eiting T hon now has), it says immediately below the death date of "Willem", the fa ther ('Vader' in Dutch):"Johana Vos gestorven (died) 18 January 184__" (looking at my copy of t he journal, the last digit is not clear to me).First of all, this entry may not refer to Theodora (Derksken) Vos Eiti ng at all, but it is reasonable that it might. Given that she came to th is country, it would in fact seem strange if the death date of their mothe r/step mother would NOT have been entered in this journal. By looki ng at my copy of the journal I had previously thought the last digit of t he death year was "4" (that is, that she died in 1844)., but IF "Johann Vo s" refers to Theodora (Dersken), then it is more likely that the year is a ctually 1849 (It is hard to decipher. I think it could be eith er a 4 or a 9.), which would mean she died in Boston, because the Eiting 's apparently did not move to Wisconsin till the spring of 1850.**** Can someone take a hard look at the death date in the original journa l? ****Theodora Vos Eiting's step daughter Elisabeth Eiting married Johann Vinken vleugel in Boston in 1849, they had a son William in East Boston in 185 0, apparently moved to New York in about 1852 and had a daughter Johanna t here in 1854. Next I know of them is that they showed up (as Fink) in t he Appleton, Wisconsin census in 1880. Since Elisabeth was the only o ne of Theodora's children/stepchildren in this country that was marri ed at that time, it seems reasonable that she may have lived with Elisabe th and husband John. Just pure speculation, but ...... .Andy Wegner, great grandson of Anton Eiting (born 1824) and Gertrude Mick e, g,g,gs of Willem Eiting and Theodora Vos.
