  Hazel (Smith) Metoxen Noble, 93, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Nov. 4, 2011, at the home of her son, Roger, in the loving care of her son, Daryle. Hazel was a good Christian woman who cared for many in need and was an inspiration to her family and friends. Family meant the world to Hazel. She was the glue that kept us all together. Hazel was born to Joseph and Rose (Cornelius) Smith on Oct. 20, 1918, on the Oneida Reservation. She was united in marriage to Freeman Metoxen, Sr. in 1934. Out of their union Hazel gave birth to 14 children, Dewey (Dorothy) Metoxen, Chicago; Gary (Pat) Metoxen, Surprise, Ariz.; Michael Metoxen, Missouri; Allen (Toni) Metoxen, Texas; Roger Metoxen, Daryle Metoxen, De Pere; Rosemary Metoxen, Kaukauna; and Patti Metoxen, San Leandro, Texas; two daughters-in law, Carole Metoxen, Little Chute; and Deloria Skenandore, Nevada. Hazel is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. One dear sister survives her, Rosalie La Mere. Three sons preceded her in death, Gordon, Freeman, Jr. and Ronald Metoxen; one daughter, Janice Metoxen; one granddaughter, Janice; and two sons who died in infancy, Joseph and Kenneth. In 1971, Hazel and her youngest children moved to Hayward, Calif., for a fresh start and just because she always wanted to live in California. While in California, she met and wed George Noble who has preceded her in death. She was a devoted caregiver and worked in several nursing homes while living in Wisconsin and California. She also spent time in Virginia, privately caring for a retired official of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In 1987, she retired and Hazel longed for her home and moved back to Oneida to be close to her family and long-time friends. She wasn't retired for long and began volunteering for the Oneida Senior Companion Program where she visited many Oneida Elders for over ten years. Hazel was so very proud of all her sons for volunteering to serve in the Armed Forces. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Pete, Jim, Izekiel Smith; also her sisters, Juliette Smith and Lillian Skenandore; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Mary (Webster) Metoxen; sisters-in-law, Nellie Acheson, Angeline Brocker, Katherine Jourdan and Clara Denny; brothers-in-law, Elmer, Lloyd and William Metoxen, Jr. Friends and family may call after 8:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at Oneida United Methodist Church, N6037 County Rd E, De Pere, until time of service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Earl L.
