  Toonen, Steven M.Steven M. Toonen, age 20, of Menasha, died peacefully Wednesday, April 2 8, 2004, after a courageous battle with Muscular Dystrophy. He was born Oc tober 3, 1983 in Neenah, son of Jerry and Judy (Schindhelm) Toonen. Stev en graduated from Menasha High School in 2002. He was currently attendi ng Fox Valley Technical College studying computer science. Steven was admi red and respected by the faculty and his fellow students for his passi on to succeed despite his medical and physical challenges. He was a devot ed Packer fan and sports enthusiast. Steven and his brother, David, fulfil led a dream when they were invited by Coach Mike Sherman to meet the enti re Packer team at the 2003 spring mini-camp. Through Make-A-Wish foundati on the brothers were able to attend Super Bowl XXX in Tempe, AZ and then a lso meet Michael Jordan. Steven was a strong person with a wonderful sen se of humor and had a will to succeed despite his illness.He will be sadly missed by his mother and step-father, Judy and Kevin Buch anan; his brother, David Toonen; two step-brothers, Eric and Bobby Buchana n; a step-sister, Nicole Buchanan, all of Menasha; maternal grandparent s, Bob and Ann Schindhelm, Fremont; step-grandparents, Bill and Gert Bucha nan, Appleton and June Buchanan, Menasha; aunts and uncles: Jean and Ly le Zuleger, Jim and Chris Schindhelm, Jack and Linda Schindhelm, Don Schin dhelm, Dick and Ronda Schindhelm, Mary Schindhelm, Mike and Jill Schindhel m, Cathy and John Wilharms, John Toonen, Cheryl Buchanan, and Bryan and Ch ristine Buchanan; cousins: Kim, Mark, Marissa and Celia Herman, Bob and Ch ristie Zuleger, Jennifer Zuleger, Shari Zuleger, Jeremy and Julie Zulege r, Karen and Fred Krammer, Amy and Rob Hutter, Jill Schindhelm, Debbie, Ma tt and A.J. Novak, Annie, Dan, Eric, Stephanie, Sarah, Ryan, Patrick, Andr ew, and Derek Schindhelm, Julie and Gary Gonnering, Brian, Terri, Thomas a nd Adrienne Wilharms, Michelle and Kharma Toonen, Jenny and Conner Toone n, Tabitha and Brittany Buchanan, and Becky and Brandon Benzshawel; and t wo loving friends, Buttons and Mittens.He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Toonen; paternal grandparent s, Jerry and Joyce Toonen; and a step-brother, Luke Mix.Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 2, 2004, at 7 p.m. at Menasha ’s Westgor Funeral Home with Fr. Paul Radetski officiating. Interment wi ll be in Highland Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may call at the fun eral home from 3 p.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers a sch olarship fund will be established in Stevens name for FVTC.The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Gehringer, Dr. Catherine Dreme l, Dr. Brian Avery and Dr. Ken Geller, the staff at Westhill Rehab, sta ff at Walgreen’s Health Initiatives, the staff of St. Elizabeth’s ICU, a nd the teachers and aides of the Menasha School District and FVTC. Very sp ecial thanks to Linda Piotrowski, for her dedication and friendship to Ste ven at home and school.“I’ll lend you for a little while a child of mine,” God said. “For y ou to love the while he lives, and mourn for when he’s dead. It may be o ne or two years, for 42, or three: but will you till I call him back, ta ke care of him for me? He’ll bring his charms to gladden you and should h is stay be brief, you’ll have his lovely memories as solace for your grie f.
