  Van Heuklon, Raymond O. Raymond O. Van Heuklon, of Appleton, age 84, died Wednesday, October 6, 20 04 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. He was surrounded by his fami ly and listening to big band music at the time. Ray was born in Applet on on September 2, 1920, son of the late William and Estelle (Stutzman) V an Heuklon. During World War II, Ray proudly served his country as a memb er of the Army Air Force, and was stationed at the Schofield Barracks in H awaii when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. Being a surviv or of Pearl Harbor brought him much pride over the years, and Ray support ed the construction and the recent installation of the World War II Vetera ns' Memorial in Washington. In fact, he was able to attend the dedicati on of the memorial. Ray was a member of the Johnston -- Blessman Post # 38 of the American Legion and a member of the Harvey Pierre Post #27 78 of the VFW. Following his discharge from the Army, Ray married Irene Ul rich Miller on July 15, 1950; she preceded him in death in 2000. Over t he years, Ray and Irene owned several area rental properties as well as en joying time together ballroom dancing. Ray also worked as a mechanical ref rigeration technician for August Winter & Sons as well as for NCR Mechanic s, and was a member of the Plumbers and Fitters Union Local 458/400 and t he NAWCC. He was a lifelong and faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Chu rch in Appleton, and enjoyed repairing old clocks in his leisure time. Ray is survived by a sister, Jean Gurnee of Appleton; a stepson, Floyd (Ju ne) Miller of Appleton; several grandchildren: Michael (April) Miller of A ppleton; Bill (Ruth) Miller of Appleton and their children Melissa and And rew; Joe (Lori) Miller of Appleton and their children Autum and Lindsay; C indy (Peter) Beyer of Appleton; Brian Miller of Appleton; Patrick Mill er of Appleton; and Larry Miller, Greg Miller, and Eric Miller, all of Geo rgia; three nieces: Jean Ann (Mark) Harn of Neenah and their children Wend y, Lauri, Martin, and Merlin; Fay Prevatt of Tampa, Florida; Catherine (Cu rtis) Logan of Appleton and their children Chad, Josh, and Eric; two nephe ws: Gary (Bonnie) Gurnee of Shawano and their children Tammy, Elizabeth, a nd Todd; David (Mary) Gurnee of Appleton and their children Emily, Jenn y, and Mary; as well as fourteen great-nieces and great-nephews. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene in 2000, stepso ns Merlin Miller and Norman Miller, and a brother-in-law David Gurnee. The funeral liturgy for Ray will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday October 1 1, 2004 at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 W. Lawrence Street in Appleto n. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 - 5 p.m. and aga in at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of the service. I nterment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, where American Legion Post #38 wi ll provide full military honors. There will be a combined American Legi on and VFW visitation at 4:45 p.m. at the funeral home followed by a pari sh prayer and scripture service at 5 p.m. to conclude the visiting hours. We watched you grow so tired, Ray, With every passing day. And our hearts have grown more heavy As we saw you fade away.
