John Leonard Ellenbecker, age 61, died unexpectedly at his home in Appleton on Wednesday, December 31, 2008. John was born on June 24, 1947, to the late Raymond and Lenore (Riedl) Ellenbecker in Appleton and grew up on a farm in Black Creek. On October 11, 1969, John was united in marriage to Sandra Gill. John retired after 30 years as a semi-truck driver and went on to teach truck driving at Fox Valley Technical College in 2002 and continued until the time of his death. John was a member of the Appleton Rifle and Pistol Club for many years; he also enjoyed coaching the Appleton Junior Rifle Club. John also enjoyed hunting, fishing and observing wildlife. John is survived by his wife, Sandra; daughter, Gina (David) Struensee of Menasha; and son, John (Nancy) Ellenbecker of Neenah. John was a loving grandfather to his three grandsons: Jake, Nate and James. In addition to his family, John is also survived by three sisters: Marilyn (John) Landwehr of Appleton; Betsy (Tom) Jakowski of Norcatur, Kansas; and Bonnie Ellenbecker of Appleton. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters: Geraldine Ellenbecker and Jean Ellenbecker. Funeral services for John will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Appleton with Rev. Dennis Ryan and Rev. John Schmitz officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 5, 2009, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Valley Funeral Home; visitation will continue on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
