  1881 Luxemburger Gazette, 13 September 1881, p. 5; Nicolas served in the Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, Co. A, In September 1864, in Petersburg, VA, he suffered from a foot injury. After it healed, Nicolas once again stepped back into service. After the War, Nicolas lived in Port Washington, where he operated the first and only Hobelmuhle (mill). At his funeral, his friend and fellow soldier, M.G. Ruppert tried to hold a eulogy at the grave. However, Mr. Ruppert was overcome with tears and was unable to continue. Nicolas left behind a widow and 6 children, the oldest 13 and the youngest, 1 year old.
