  Holding the hand of the love of his life, Maxine, Kop passed quietly from this life the morning of April 3, 2008. A loving and devoted husband and father he was immensely proud of his family and will forever remain a source of inspiration and strength. Bernard Michael Kopczynski was the 10th of 12 children born to August and Magdalena Kopczynski on February 23, 1919 in Cottonwood, Idaho. A self taught musician, he played multiple instruments as a teenager in a family band during the 1930's and continued playing piano throughout his life. On April 6, 1942 he married Maxine Romain and shortly after joined the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served his country as a pilot and flight instructor during World War II. After his military discharge in November 1945 he and Maxine returned to Spokane. He founded KOP Cabinet Shop and ultimately KOP Construction Company. Kop was a man of passionate convictions and compassionate generosity. He was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him as a businessman, community leader, mentor, friend and father. Among his many civic contributions he will be remembered for his leadership as a Trustee and Board President of the Spokane Symphony, as a Trustee for the Community College Foundation, Chairman of the Washington State Arts Commission, and President of the Inland Empire Association of General Contractors. He is survived by his children Dawne (Larry) Drake, Convent Station, NJ; Chris (Michelle Mullin) Kopczynski, Spokane; Cary (Jan) Kopczynski, Issaquah; Elizabeth (Michael) Moore, Yakima; Susan (Mike) Jostrom, Seattle; and Jean (Francine) Chough, Vancouver, WA, in addition to 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, John and Ray and two sisters, Mary and Doriene. Services will be held Saturday, April 12 at 10:00 AM at Heritage Funeral Home, 508 North Government Way, Spokane. A reception will follow immediately. Memorial remembrances can be made to the Spokane Symphony Orchestra or Hospice of Spokane.
