  WILLIAM AND MARGARETHA HEIN STORY. William Hein was born in Hausen, Bavaria, Germany in 1844. He came to New York in about 1861, with his mother, brothers, and sisters. This information is taken from the Veterans Graves Registration: William Hein enlisted in the Civil; War in Co. "I" 1st Connecticut Calvary at Woodstock, Conn., on December 24, 1863. He was captured October 17, 1864 at the "Battle of Cedar Run Church", pardoned February 27, 1865, and discharged JuIy 6, 1865. He left St. Louis, Missouri, came up the Mississippi River, landed in Prairie de Chien, and then walked up tote roads to Portage. Then on north into Wisconsin. We believe he may have lived for a time around Keil or Chilton, as his first wife, Margaretha Diehl was from Keil, Wisconsin. From this marriage there were eight children, the first 3 or 4 were born at Keil and Chilton. The rest being born on the Homestead in the Township of Eau Pleine. Margaretha's parents were: Sebastian Diehl married Barbara Lenz in Budenheim, Germany. Margaretha had 3 sisters, Kate, Mary and Lizzie, and 3 brothers, Paul, Sebastian and Joe. William applied for a Homestead patent in the Township of Eau Pleine on March 7, 1875. This was nine miles from the closest town, Unity. They had to improve the land for five years in order to get the title. He applied for a certificate January 6, 1882 and got title to the land (160 acres) May 5, 1883. The rate at that time was $2.50 an acre. We understand that his brothers, Wendlin and Philip took out homesteads about that time. Henry Boland, Sr. came the same time as William; his place was about a half mile away. When they first came to the homestead there were no roads or buildings, it was all woods. They cleared land and built their first house of logs or bark. He later found out he had built across the survey line and was on the wrong property. The children had a mile and a half to go to school through the woods, so a path had to be cleared for them. One time on their way to school they came across a bear up in a tree. They ran home and told their father and he got his gun and went out and shot it. W illiam liked to hunt, and he taught his boys to hunt also. They hunted to have meat on the table in those days. They used black powder and buck shot in their guns and were told to be sure and get their game, not just wound it. George and Joe had a salt lick they used to watch with a double barrelled shot gun. Mostly the deer dropped, but one day after the smoke cleared away there was no deer. So what would they do now? Go home to a good licking. But they followed the blood for a couple hundred yards, and there she was, made a couple of kids really happy. Some early history taken from records of the Town Board of Brighton: 1877 - paid poll tax $1.50. April 1877 - Chattel Mortgage of $13.00 on one red and white cow 7 years old. Cancelled. 1878 - Road overseer of District 3. Whenever they needed groceries, mail or anything from Unity they would walk 9 miles there and back with supplies; sometimes taking butter into exchange for groceries. Margaretha died in 1883 when she got sick after drinking water from a stream. Mary (14 years old), being the eldest of the family helped care for her younger brothers and sisters until William married again in 1887. Anyone who has lived without plumbing and electricity can realize the work Mary had to do with 7 children younger than herself. We have not been able to find out much about Anna Hein, she was bridesmaid for her sister Mary, and died in 1901 at the age of 22. She is buried in Webertown Cemetery. Louise never married and made her home with her half brother Henry and his wife Ruth Hein for a number of years, helping them with chores. She was killed in a silo accident at the age of 48, in 1930. She is buried in Webertown Cemetery, north of Stratford. WILLIAM AND GERTRUDE HEIN William married Gertrude Bonnlander in 1887; she was from New Holstein, Wisconsin, a town not far from Kiel, where his first wife came from. Gertrude had a son Martin, which William adopted. During the first 12 years, of this marriage, 8 more children were born to the William Hein family. Totaling 17 with Martin. They were all born at home in the Township of Eau Pleine. In the early years before Adam was born, William used to go to Prairie-de-Chien to work for the summer, and come home with a cow and maybe a calf in the fall for some of his work. At that time Gertrude had a team of oxen to use on the wagon to go to Unity and for other use. One of those summers when William was away the wolves killed one of the oxen, so she only had one to hitch to the wagon. In 1897 they built a big brick house which was a great improvement over the log one. The brick house was lived in by three generations, William and Gertrude, Adam and Anna and Ray and Marlea until 1966 when Ray and Marlea moved into their new home. The brick house was taken down in 1969 - 1970. In 1904 they had a big barn raising and built the barn that is still in use on the farm today. Some of the older members of the family left home when they were young men and women. The oldest son, William J. went west to Washington in 1894 to be with his Uncle Phil Hein. George and Joe also went to Washington where they worked for some time, and George made his home there. Lizzie married and made her home in South Dakota. Later on Martin, Henry, Phil, John, Albert, and Andrew all made a trip out west, then up into Canada; Martin, Henry and Albert doing some homesteading at Athabasca, Alberta. Henry and Albert stayed until World War I started, and then went home and joined the army in Wisconsin. Martin stayed on at Athabasca and made his home there. Joe went up into Alberta in 1917 and settled east of Hussar. His wife is still alive and lives in Calgary. John and Clara both moved to Bellevue, Nebraska. Albert, Henry and Catherine all settled on farms not far from their father's homestead. Albert's wife, Angie, still lives on their farm with her two sons, Bob and Bill. Adam worked for his mother from 1923 until he purchased the farm in 1932 after his mother's death in 1929. Adam farmed until his son Ray took over in 1950. Adam and his wife Anna now live in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Andrew went to California around 1928 to 1930, and made his home there. His wife still lives there with their daughter, Beryl. Gertrude carried on with the farming after William's death in 1912. We understand she belonged to the Holstein-Friesian Association and had some prize cows. Some of her sons and families stayed on the farm at times and helped with the work. Ray and his family still operate a very good dairy farm on the homestead. They have made some great improvements and additions to the original barn that grandfather (William Hein) built in 1904. He chose a great spot in a beautiful part of the country. William died of a heart condition and Gertrude died as a result of sugar diabetes. They are buried in the parish cemetery north of Stratford.
