  Romuald Shorty Verboomen, 92, of Sturgeon Bay, died early Sunday morning at his home. He was born February 7, 1917 in Kaukauna, the son of the late Andrew and Mary (Heindl) Verboomen. Following high school and two years at Salvatorian Seminary at St. Nazianz he graduated from St. Johns University in Collegeville, Minnesota with a B.S. in Philosophy. He was a weatherman and pilot during WWII in the Army Air Corps, and taught weather to pilots. He married Kathleen M. Willmett on May 26, 1942 in Junction City, Kansas. She preceded him in death on November 24, 1962 in Madison, Wisconsin. Shorty did some farming in Kaukauna, and worked at the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton. He worked in Sturgeon Bay as a engine specialist. After retiring in 1979, he taught engine repair at NWTC. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay, the Knights of Columbus, and was a life member of the American Legion. He loved photography, film developing and printing, traveling, card playing, reading, hunting and fishing, taxidermy, and keeping history of residents of Orchard Valley Apartments. Survivors include his two daughters, Kathleen Moller of Sturgeon Bay, Mary Burns of Tavares, Florida; grandchildren, Marc Frick, Adam (Marie) Burns; great-grandchildren, Daniel Burns, US Navy, Michael Burns; brother, Paul (Jane) Verboomen of Lakewood, WI, Carl (Linda) Verboomen of Wrightstown; sister-in-law, Roseann Verboomen; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (December 1, 2009) at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. Friends may call at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay on Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and at the church on Tuesday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. There will be a parish wake at 6:30 p.m. Monday evening at Huehns Funeral Home.
