    • From genealogy researcher David Ayers;

      These are all the "Steffens" coming out of Antwerp Belgium on the ship "Luconia" that arrived at Ellis Island in June 12, 1848. But many are actually Stark. This is clear from the family lists given in Commemorative biographical record of the Fox River Valley counties of Brown, Outagamie and Winnebago : containing biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens, and of many of the early settled families, J. H. Beers and Co., 1895, pages 828 and 829, which lists the children of Jakob Steffen clearly, and the German records recorded by Jade Schmitt (see FindaGrave entry for Peter Stark, also copy of the latter and Orenhofen Retuter book set as a "Story" on many of the records in David John Ayers public family tree for his early Stark and Steffen ancestors) which lists clearly the children of Chrisopher and Anna (Reuter) Stark.
      Anna Steffen listed first (as born in 1802, but in the German records as born in 1794 - not sure which is correct) is Anna Reuter Stark Steffen, widowed wife of Christoph(er) Stark, now (at the time of this passage on the Luconia) third wife of Jakob Steffen.
      "Peter Steffen" listed as 16 is actually Peter Stark and according to German records and his grave stone, born in 1830, not 1832 as listed here.
      "Lucia Steffen" listed as born approximately in 1834 is the Lucia Stark listed in the German records as born February 8, 1833 and as having possible emigrated with Jakob and Anna in 1848 (see again "Jade Schmitt" story referenced above). The other Lucia Stark in Christof and Anna Stark's family, born in 1927, had died as a little girl (see Orenhofen book record).
      Apollonia Steffen listed here is actually Apollonia Stark Steffen, now married to John ("Johann") Steffen since 1845 (abundantly clear in records from America, and the above referenced "Commemorative Biographical Record…"). She is the great-great-grandmother of the author (David John Ayers) of these notes. The Anna Steffen listed last above is their youngest (and at this point only) child, who died after arriving in the U.S., passing away in about 1850.
      One son by Christoph(er) and Anna Stark's marriage is clearly not listed here, namely Adam. The German records (see "Jade Schmitt" records referenced above) list him as one of Anna's Stark children Other records (see comments regarding Paula Rosa Owen's handwritten notes from Bernice Steffen, also Orenhofen Karl Becker book that shows he and his wife and children living and dying in Orenhofen) indicate that he clearly stayed in Prussia and did not come to America with the rest of the family. Moreover, the German records indicate that at least "one stepson" (that is, of Jakob's) did not emigrate to America. That, and the other (above) evidence, supports Adam Stark having stayed behind (with his new wife "E. Schmitz", whom he had married in 1847 (see Jade Schmitt record referenced above), even though the Orenhofen Reuter book indicates Adam had emigrated with his blended family. Since The "Elisabeth Stark" (b. 1829) listed in the German record as having possibly emigrated with Jakob and Anna, did not appear on the Luconia list above, and in other records (Karl Becker, Orenhofen) her death is listed in the church records in Orenhofen, over a decade before the blended Steffen family left Orenhofen.
      OTHER NOTES ON STEFFENS HERE
      The Commemorative Biographical Record accounts (referenced above) of the Jakob Steffen children by his two wives with whom he had children do not list a Symen Steffen born approximately 1832. Symen was not one of Christopher and Anna Stark's children. However, that date of 1832 would put make sense in the list of the children Jakob had with his second wife prior to marrying Anna (between Conrad and Ignatz). Moreover, the German records (see Jade Schmitt referenced above) list a son of Jakob's, Friedrich Wilhem, born in 1832 as one of the "children" with whom Jakob and Anna probably emigrated in 1848. This is almost certainly "Symen". The Commemorative Biographical record (above), which again appear to be very complete in listing Jakob's children, do not mention a Friedrich Wilhelm either, but then he might have died prior to the family reaching Wisconsin. Regardless, we have no "Symen Steffen" or "Friedrich Wilhelm" Steffen appearing anywhere else as one of Jakob Steffen's sons. But he is clearly established as a son in the Orenhofen records, born that year (1832).
      "Conrad born approximately 1829" (above) appears to be the "Leonard Steffen" (as in Leonard Conrad) attested to abundantly elsewhere. This fits other records (see David John Ayers family tree on Ancestry.com, Commemorative Biographical record above; Leonard is the name given to the Jakob Steffen son born in September 1828 listed in the German records transcribed by Jade Schmitt referenced above, etc).
