  Mr. Charles C. Mertens, age 84, passed away Wednesday after a long illness. He was born in Chilton, July 24, 1883. Mr. Mertens operated a blacksmith shop at Sherwood for over 30 years and was employed by the Menominee Sugar Company until he retired in 1948. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Marie) Pfluger, DePere; three sons, George of Kaukauna, Henry, Sherwood, Carl, Greenville; four brothers, Jake and John, Fond du Lac, Fred, of Byron and Leo, Oakfield; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Coleman, Fond du Lac, Mrs. Frank Strick, Hartford; seven grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic church, Sherwood and interment will be in the parish cemetery. (Appleton Post Crescent - June 13, 1968)
