    Biography
    • John Shaughnessy was born in 1824 in Glenduff, County Limerick, Ireland. He signed a will on 28 Sep 1894 in Glenmore, Brown County, Wisconsin. The will was witnessed by John Flaherty of Morrison, Brown County, Wisconsin and Charles Ohlson of Glenmore, Brown County, Wisconsin. John left his wife Catherine his wearing apparel, his ornaments and household furniture. He also left her $250. The rest of the estate was left to his son George Shaughnessy. George was also the executor of the will. He died on 3 Oct 1894 in Glenmore, Brown County, Wisconsin. John was buried on 6 Oct 1894 in St. John`s Catholic Church Cemetery, Morrison, Brown County, Wisconsin. "He was one of the well-to-do and highly respected old citizens of Glenmore Township, Brown County...His parents...were farming people, who worked industriously to support their large family. John O`Shaughnessy attended the common schools until fifteen years of age, and then assisted his father on the farm until he reached his majority. At this time, receiving money from his parents to pay his way to America, he bid his early home and friends farewell, and took passage at Cork on the `Louisiana,` bound for Quebec, Canada, where he landed in the month of August, after a voyage of six weeks and three days. He first found employment with farmers, harvesting, and afterward came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, taking the water route, via Oswego, New York. Mr. O`Shaughnessy purchased a horse and wagon, and commenced the draying business in Milwaukee, continued that until 1850, in the meantime saving some money. Several railroads were then in course of construction in New York State, and he went to Buffalo, where he obtained employment as a laborer on the New York & Erie railway." He was married to Catherine Flaherty, daughter of Thomas O`Flaherty and Mary Lynch, on 30 May 1850 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. The marriage took place in St. Patrick`s Catholic Church. They were married by Peter Bede and the witnesses were John Flaherty and Eleanor Flaherty. The family may have been from Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland.
