Al Lobeck, 84, Sun Lakes, Ariz., formerly of Mandan, passed away Nov. 27, 2012, peacefully, surrounded by his family as they reminisced about wonderful family times, such as spending time at Lake; hunting trips with his brother and sons; many, many hours of card playing; and various projects teaching his kids and preparing them for life. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan. Burial service will be held at 3 p.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan, with lunch following burial service at the Eagles Club in Mandan. Al was born in Edgeley on June 26, 1928, to Alex and Ivanelle (Jarrett) Lobeck. He grew up in Verona with his parents and two brothers, graduating from Verona High School in 1946. Al joined the U.S. Army in January 1951 and served until November 1952, touring the world from the Panama Canal to Greenland while serving his country. Al married Grace Sabby, also of Verona, in 1951. They lived in Fargo for the first few years of their marriage and moved to Mandan in 1953 where they resided until they moved to Arizona in 2006. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2011. Al was one of the original employees of the Mandan Refinery and worked for 38 years before retiring and starting his second career as a Mandan School District Bus Driver, where he worked for 18 years. Al was a lifetime member of the Elks Club, where he was voted Elk of the Year in 1989, a member of the American Legion and VFW for over 50 years and a member of the Eagles since 1988. Al was known by all to have a very strong, loyal, caring and fun-loving personality. Because of this, throughout his life he had many, many very strong friendships that lasted his entire lifetime and he left a lasting impression with all those he met. He was always one of the first to help out his friends and family and was very generous with his time and support. Al's greatest love was his family, including five grandsons and step-grandson. He loved spending time playing cards, sharing stories, time at the Lake, fishing, golfing, watching his grandsons' sporting activities, and family get-togethers. He is survived by his three children, Jeff (Stephanie) Lobeck, Chandler, Ariz., Jim (Tana) Lobeck, Mandan, and Becky (Greg) Haider, Peoria, Ill. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alex (A.J.) and Zachary Lobeck, Chandler, Ariz., Kaden and Brogan Lobeck, Mandan, and Jordan Thomas Haider, Peoria, Ill., and step-grandson, Britain Bentz, Mandan. He is also survived by his brother, Tom (Mary) Lobeck, Yucca Valley, Calif.; as well as many cherished family members and special friends that are too numerous to name. He will be greatly missed by everyone. Al was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; his parents, Alex and Ivanelle Lobeck; his brother, James C. Lobeck; his sister-in-law, Donna Ritter; his brothers-in-law, George Berry, Louis Christensen and Richard Ritter; his nieces, Lori Ann Christensen and Laurie Berry; as well as many cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins.
