From: FLAG14To: WilpoltHistoryJay, Thanks for sharing your McCarthy's with me - there's always the possi bility that mine will connect to these.Just to share a couple of stories that I think show how hardy these ear ly settlers were. Charles' obit tells quite a bit about his life. He had s ome learning at a Catholic school in Ireland and since he was unhappy livi ng the quiet life on the farm, he joined the British Army. He didn't li ke what he saw there, so came to the US entering in PA. He tried farming b ut wasn't very successful so joined the regular army. Served his term th en got out, married, tried to work as a tenant farmer and wasn't happ y. So he decided to "head west" and ended up in the forests of Wisconsin a round 1855. During one winter there was no flour or meal in his house or h is neighbors. The roads were so muddy he couldn't use a wagon or hor se so he walked 20 miles and carried 100 lbs of flour back! The other is about Dennis. When he was 88 (in 1908) years old the top of h is stove pipe blew off during a January storm. Sooooooo, even though his c hildren admonished him not to, he used a ladder to climb onto the roof, th en used a camp chair to stand on the roof so he could put the stovepipe ba ck! Well, the predictible happened - he fell off the chair and off the roo f, broke his hip and sustained other internal injuries. He was expect ed to die. However, a newspaper article two weeks after the fall indicat ed that he was recovering and using a kitchen chair to assist him in walki ng (the homemade walker!). Dennis died in February of 1910!
Good luck to you!!!! Please keep me in mind.Joyce

      Kaukauna from 1860's till 1909 and 1910.
Some of Charles' children are: Charles, Jr. who ran a hardware store inMankato, KS until 1922 or 1932 when his sons Will and Ed took over thebusiness. Another son of Charles Jr was Daniel who was a lawyer who liv ed inHayes, KS. Daniel became a Kansas State Senator and married KatherineO'Loughlin who served in the US Congress during FDR's first term. Micha el whowas killed in a gruesome murder in 1905 by Wenzel Kabat. Michael did notmarry. Dennis - all I know about him is that he lived in Chicago in 1905 a smentioned in Michael's will. Timothy who worked in mines in Utah andeventually moved to Denver. Charles Sr. moved to Mankato to live with Char lesJr. around 1909. Sometime between February and December of 1910 he moved t oDenver to live with Timothy. He died in Denver in December 1910.
Some of Dennis' children are: Charles who llived in Eldred and Fort Pierce ,FL at the time of his death circa 1907. This Charles was a lawyer and a ma jorpineapple grower in Ft. Pierce. He was murdered by one of the principals i nland deal he was handling for a client. Joseph who was mayor of Kaukauna i nthe 1890's. At the time of his death in 1908, he was treasurer of Outagami eCounty. Joseph was also a cement contractor. He also had a sone named Richa rd

-------------------Date: 7/10/2001 7:43:29 PM Pacific Daylight TimeFrom: FLAG14 To: Wilpo ltHistoryJay, Sorry - can't connect to this one. I do have a John McCarthy but he d ied in 1980 in Albuquerque, NM. His daughter was Mary Margaret so the nam es are very tempting. So far I have Dennis McCarty and Charles McCarthy in Kaukauna. They were b rothers in spite of the different spelling. Apparently both spelled the na me without the "h" when they first came to the states. I have an affidav it that is part of Charles' Civil War Pension file written in the 1890's t hat explains the discrepency. He indicates that he had always spelled it M cCarty but had recently been in contact with relatives in ireland who conv inced him he was spelling it incorrectly. Charles' family from then on spe lls it McCarthy. Dennis apparently was not convinced. His family see ms to have stuck with the McCarty spelling.I do believe ther is another brother and I think his name is Florence. Sti ll owrking on him and others - so the connection may still be out the re - keep in touch. Joyce

In Reply to: McCarthy's from Bantry by Carol Murray of 3164

Carol, I have Charles and Ellen (Shea/Shay)McCarthy of Bantry who had at l east the following chldren: Daniel b. abt. 1810 married Johanna Cronin ab t. 1843. Their daughter Mary was born presumably in Bantry 9 Oct 1845. Bro ther Charles b. 20 May 1820. Dennis b. abt. 1823. Probably a daughter Cath erine who married a Patrick Burke.Daniel and Dennis left for Canada in 1847. They landed in Quebec and by 18 50 they were in Oswego where Dennis married Margaret Tobin of Whiddy Isla nd in Bantry Bay.Charles left Ireland for the US a bit later - probably abt. 1849. He marri ed Catherine Sullivan of Balleydehob in the US but the Sullivan family sto ry is that they had known each other in Ireland.Daniel and Johanna Cronin McCarthy ended up on East Bloomfield, NY for t he remainder of their days. Dennis and Charles moved west to the Kaukau na WI area.Anything familiar? We also have lots of Charles', Dennis', Daniel and mal es named Florence leading me to think that these 3 brothers had a broth er named Florence but I've been unable to prove a connection to the sever al Florences I've found in NY and WI.Hope we make a connection. BTW - are you aware of a family nickname? Wh en we were in Bantry last year we were told that we would need to know t he nickname of our McCarthy's - that there are so many of then that nickna mes had to be developed to keep the various families straight.

JoyceDied, Charles McCarthy at Denver, Colorado on December 8, 1910 of gastriti s, aged 90 years, was buried in the Catholic cemetery at Esbon, Kansa s, on Sunday, December 11, 1910. The deceased resided with his son Charles in Mankato (KS) for over a ye ar before going to Denver and became quite a familiar object on our street s. He was very quiet and observing, but owing to deafness did not often en gage in conversation. Yet he enjoyed having those he like around him and c ould not do too much for their comfort and enjoyment. He reared a fami ly of seven children, six boys and one girl. His wife and four of his chil dren have preceded him, He moved to Denver, Colorado last spri ng to make a home with his son, Timothy D. and also to give a home to t wo granddaughters whose mother had died in early spring and whose father h ad been dead some years. In this new home he builded at the fo ot of the giant mountains of America, surrounded by the members of his n ew home, one of the noblemen of this earth quietly passed to the beyon d, a patriot and soldier. His life work is finished and of that work we wi ll briefly write.
Charles McCarthy was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1820. His parents we re poor, his surroundings were not to the suiting of a sturdy, energetic y outh. The county afforded no inducement for him to exert and after gaini ng some education in a parochial school and to see more of the world he en listed in the British army. There he saw oppression that was galling to h is nature. He quit army life and turned his longing eyes toward that la nd of freedom for the oppressed and came to the United States stoppi ng in Pennsylvania. Not succeeding well in trying to be an American farm er and Artisan and knowing how to soldier, he enlisted in the Regular arm y. After serving his enlistment he hired to a farmer in Pennsylvania to wo rk a year for board, washing and mending and at a wage of thirteen dola rs a month. In the meantime he married and after trying to build up by wor king for others he concluded to cast his lot for weal or woe in the far we st and came to Wisconsin, settling near Manitowoc in the forest sometime a bout 1855. There he battled with all the hardships incident to making a ho me in a new country. One winter the snow and mud had made all travel wi th team impossible. There was no meal or flour in his or any neighbor's ho use. He walked twenty miles and carried a sack of flour home on his bac k. In 1863, he moved to Kaukauna. The Civil War was raging and he was chaf ing to take part in it. He had a family of small children, the eldest, Cha rles a stripling of a boy not over fourteen years and a wife who opposed h is going. But in 1864 he felt he could stay out no longer. Foreign governm ents were doing all they dared to do to aid the slaveholders of the sou th to disrupt this government and ehn divide us amongst them. He had co me to the United States to enjoy liberty, so giving his family into the ca re of an all wise providence, he ran away with some of his neighbors and e nlisted in the 44th Wisconsin infantry. His family did not know of his whe reabouts until he returned home to bid them good-bye wearing his unifor m. He said he would rather have died fighting for his country than to ha ve it disrupted and possibly again live under a monarchy. So lived and di ed a grand, patriotic American citizen by adoption, the kind that ca me to us to help build and maintain this government of ours.
