John Joseph Derks, 73 of Appleton died peacefully Wednesday June 7, 2017 at Brewster Village. He was born in Appleton April 14, 1944, son of the late John and Angela (Heegeman) Derks. John married Karen Smith on February 23, 1974. She preceded him in death on June 1, 2006. John served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church; faith was a very important part of his life. John worked for the Town of Buchanan for over 30 years as Town Clerk, retiring in 2007. He loved attending his three son's sporting events during high school, he made almost all of their track and cross country meets. John enjoyed reading, talking politics, and meeting new people. John was a very social man. John is survived by his two sons: Jason (Sheri), Neenah, and Jeff, Appleton; daughter in-law, Jessi, Kimberly; four grandchildren: Lincoln, Isabella, Sydney and Ruby; and three sisters: Gertrude (David) Gritton, Oconto, Patricia (Gerald) Ozburn, Seattle, Washington and Mary Sprangers, Kaukauna. He was further preceded in death by his son, Greg; two grandchildren: Lucy and Isaiah; sister and brother in-law: Rose (Kim) DeLeeuw; and brother in-law, George Sprangers. Mass of Christian burial for John will be 11:00 AM on Monday June 12, 2017 at HOLY SPIRIT CATHOLIC CHURCH, E2796 Calumet St; Darboy, with Fr. Robert Kollath officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday June 11 at Valley Funeral Home from 3:00 until 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue at the church Monday morning beginning at 9:00 until 10:45 AM, with Mass to follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Holy Angels Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established. John's family would like to thank the entire staff at Brewster Village for all of their care and compassion.
