  Kaukauna Newspaper ; OBITUARY: In last weeks issue, the death of MRS. ANNA HECKER HOFFMANN was noted just as the paper was going to press. This good woman lived a longer span of years than many other pioneer women who came to America, and in the wilds of Wisconsin worked and helped to make the badger state what is. She was born in Germany, Oct 17, 1835. When she was 14 years of age her parents were among many others of the same country who came to the new land to get away from political persecution. Most notable of those immigrants in 1848 were Carl Schulz. Her parents settled in Milwaukee for a brief period and then were attracted to the farming section in Waukesha county. They stated a claim in the town of Pewaukee. The first years brought great effort to clear the land. She helped to cut down trees, pile the brush, and afterwards roll the logs into piles for burning. Then came the seeding among the stumps. She drove the oxen and plied the grub hoe about the roots of stumps, so the wheat could get root, and in the harvest she sickled the grain and helped thresh it with the flail. Those were the days of hard and vigorous labor. She spent her young womanhood and mature years on the HECKER homestead. In the month of November, 1875, she married the late Phillip Hoffmann, also a pioneer settler of this section who it is said, blazed the first trail from Chicago to Green Bay. Of this union one daughter, Mrs. John Wick, was born to them and in whose home she has been tenderly cared for in her declining years. Mr. Hoffmann died in 1906. Surviving are 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, two step daughters, Mrs. Rose Wick and Mrs. Bernard Stuettgen and a stepson William Hoffman of Grafton."
