  Earl Hephner, Oshkosh, Wisconsin advised that family stories told about Peter and his wife collecting spices and seeds from Oh.. to plant at their new home in Mackville, Wisconsin. In 1949 the Rev. Nicholas L. Gross, Catholic Pastor of Mackville, published his booklet of research entitled, "One Hundred Years of Mackville." The booklet purports to represent scattered fragments of Mackville History, as compiled by Rev. Gross since he became pastor in 1931. The following selections are taken from this booklet: "When the first settlers entered this district in 1849, they found the entire section heavily wooded. After Wisconsin was granted statehood in 1848 Mackville was known as Centre. The second settlers to arrive from Oh.. was the Peter Hephner family in October 1849. On his way here, he lost his second oldest son when he reached Green Bay, to the great grief of the old man, and there he interred his remains. On entering the woods he "located" the NE 1/4 of Section 27, Twp. 22, Range 17, where he endured many hardships. In his family were several grown up sons and daughters by whose marriages new homes were builded and new farms settled. Nicholas Marshall Hephner, in the Spring of 1850, went to Green Bay for his bride and settled in Section 21. Only a few weeks later, Mary Ann Hephner was married to Mathew Nugent and settled on the South Half of Section 36. This first marriage was of Nicholas Marshall Hephner and Helen (Ellen) Sage. They had become acquainted coming on the boat from the East in the Fall of 1849. Marshall Hephner was looking for Holy Water to bless a sick person when he ran into Miss Sage. Peter Hephner gave the plot of four acres on the southwest corner of his farm to build a burial place and church. Both N. Marshall Hephner and Peter Hephner served for many years in affairs of the church and school. The first mass was offered in the year 1849 in the home of Peter Hephner. In 1855 the first church, made of logs, was erected on the plot given by Peter Hephner under the patronage of St. Edward the Confessor. In 1873 when the Bishop came to Mackville and requested a piece of ground to build a priest's house, the widow (Peter) Hephnersaid, 'I will give you an acre of ground for a priest's house to be builded on, just as well as my husband gave 3 acres to build a church on.' After the house was built in the spring of 1874, a priest came. (Thus ending the period of mission priests.) The first school meeting was held at the house of Peter Hephner in 1853. Peter and N. M. Hephner were elected as new officers. A school teacher was hired for the sum of $25. for three months in her own house." In 1959 Rev. Gross, wrote another booklet, "In the Second Hundred Years of Mackville". In this booklet he wrote: "In 1776, the British Government brought to the Colonies a small army of soldiers who had been recruited from the Principality of Hesse in Germany. After the war most of these soldiers returned to their homeland. Some stayed and settled in the new country. Among the group that stayed was the Hephner family, ancestors of Peter Hephner, one of Mackville's first settlers. Peter Hephner drifted westward to Oh.. and then , in 1849, came to Mackville. Descendants of the family still live in Kaukauna and Chilton." (It is conjectured that the Rev. Gross may have received this information from uncle John Corcoran, of Kaukauna, who seemed to be the unofficial historian of the Hephner family.) source: Everette File Contact: Randy Everette
