  Whalen, John F. Jack Appleton John F. Whalen, son of Frances and James Whalen, passed away on November 23rd, at the age of 88 at Brewster Village. He was born in Belvidere, Illinois on July 16, 1922. He married Donna J. Haley on June 3, 1944 in Joplin, Missouri where he was stationed in the Army Signal Corps. After spending one and a half years in India during WWII, he graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana with a degree in chemical engineering. He and Donna moved to Appleton in 1947 when he took a position at the Institute of Paper Chemistry. After seven years, he accepted a position at Combined Locks Paper Company as Technical Director, moving up to Mill Manager in 1967. From there he transferred to Appleton Papers as Senior Technical Service Representative until his retirement in 1984. He served as chairman of Lake States TAPPI (1962-63) and was on the advisory committee of the local Salvation Army (1969-72). Jack enjoyed sports of all kinds. He was an avid bridge player and enjoyed gardening. He has been a member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Appleton for many years. Jack is the youngest of eight children, all of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by Donna, his wife of 66 years; his 3 children: Tom (Mary McCoy) Whalen, Milwaukee, Jeanne (Pete) Schwaller, Appleton, and Paul (Ann) Whalen, Appleton; 5 grandchildren: Sam and Abbie Schwaller, Elizabeth, Patrick, and Christopher Whalen. The Funeral Liturgy for Jack will be held at 11 am Saturday, November 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 222 E. Fremont St, Appleton, with Father David Kelly officiating. Friends may visit in the Sacred Heart Room at church on Saturday from 9 am until the time of service. Interment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. A memorial fund has been established. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Brewster Village, and all who helped care for Jack during the last several months.
