Herbert Anton Leis, 87, of Cashton, WI, loving husband, father, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua, WI. His legacy will live on through his devoted wife, Virginia, of 63 years; nine children and 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Herb was born on July 3, 1920 to Anton and Anna (Marx) Leis in the town of Jefferson. On May 9, 1944 he married his best friend, Virginia Klinkner. Together they farmed 36 years and raised nine children. Herb's passion was his family, farming, traveling-even if it was just his daily trip to the farm and playing cards with friends. Herb will be missed for his wonderful smile, kindness, sense of humor and true love for life. Herb is survived by his dear wife, Virginia; their 9 children, Shirley (James) Wuensch of Viroqua, WI, Dorothy (Vis) Rengasamy of Vellejo, CA, Ruth (Charlie) Swartz of Paso Robles, CA, Jerry (Deb) Leis of Baraboo, WI, Phillip Leis of Sparta, WI, Patricia (Dennis) Olson of La Crosse, WI, Wayne (Sherry) Leis of Cashton, WI, Tony (Lisa) Leis of Dickeyville, WI and Brenda Leis of Minneapolis, MN; brothers and sisters, Marie (Glen) Whitehead, Paul (Donna) Leis, Rose (John) Hundt all of Cashton, WI, Jim (Rosie) Leis of Pewaukee, and Ken (Lillian) Leis of Madison, WI; 19 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, LeRoy and Walter Leis and his sister Eleanor Leis who died at age three. A Mass of Christian burial will be on Friday, January 11, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cashton, WI. Father John Steiner will officiate. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends are invited for visitation on Thursday, January 10, 2008, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Cashton. The knights of Columbus will lead the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be on Friday, from 9:00 -10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. Torkelson Funeral Home in Cashton is assisting the family with arrangements. On line condolences may be offered at www.torkelsonfuneralhome.com .
