  WILLIAM LITJEN PASSED ON. He Died Monday Night, April 17, at Home in David City. On Monday night, April 17, about 6 o'clock, William Litjen, ill for three weeks with Bright's disease and heart trouble, passed on at his home in David City. He was in his 77th year. He had been a resident of Butler county for 53 years, and had resided in David City for 12 years. He was born in Sevenum, Holland, December 23, 1845, and came to America when 23 years of age, spending four years at DePere, Wis, then coming to Nebraska and Butler county, where he followed the occupation of farming until retiring from active life in 1910 and coming to David City to spend the rest of his days. He started farming in Center township in a dug-out, he and John Jacobs batching together. He was a hard worker and at time of his death owned 480 acres of land in Center township as well as his town residence. He helped build four churches during his life in Butler county. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church, David City. Mr. Litjen was married in Center township in 1873 to Hendrina DeByl, who died in the same year, leaving one daughter, later Mrs. Arnold Abts, now deceased. In 1880 Mr. Litjen was married to Johanna Vanderloop. To them wer born thirteen children, of whom three died in infancy. The sons and daughters who survive are Arnold Litjen of Rushville, George Litjen of Elgin, Mrs. Charles Roberts of Grant, Mrs. Russell Lawrence of Kearney, Mrs. John Fox of Lincoln, Mrs. Leonard Zegers of Center township and Mrs. M. C. Demuth, Mrs. Tillie Maule, Mrs. Victor Otoupalik and Gilbert Litjen of David City. Mr. Litjen also leaves one sister, Mrs. Gilbert Zegers. Mrs. Litjen died January 13, 1922, in David City. This (Thursday) morning at 9:30 o'clock, funeral services for Mr. Litjen were held in St. Mary's Catholic church, David City and were conducted by Rev. Bernard Sproll. Singing was by the Sisters' Choir. The pallbearers were Frank Bougger, Mike Birkel, Charles Brochtrup, Jacob Demuth, Mike Medinger and Peter Vanderheiden. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery. All of the Litjen childern were in attendance at the funeral, also Mrs. Max Elias from Columbus, a niece; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gieger from Ulysses, Mrs. Geiger a niece; and Anton Jansen from Rushville, a brother-in-law.
