  Dr. Alvin Brusky, 96, Green Bay, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at a local nursing home after a lingering illness. He was born April 12, 1906, in the township of West Kewaunee to John and Josephine (Demsky) Brusky, the fourth of 13 children. At age 5, he moved with his family to a farm in the township of Lessor in Shawano County. Dr. Brusky graduated from East High Schoo in Green Bay, where he played baseball and basketball. He then went to Marquette University, where he worked his way through undergraduate and medical school by cutting hair in a barbershop. As a graduate of Marquette University School of Medicine in 1931, Dr. Brusky served a one-year internship and a one-year surgical residency at Milwaukee County General Hospital. He then established a private practice in Seymour, Wisconsin, and a second one in Green Bay a year later. For the next 50 years he cared for patients in Green Bay and surrounding communities, retiring in 1982. His general medicine practice included surgery, obstetrics and orthopedics. He married the former Helen Eisenreich in Seymour, Wisconsin, on December 26, 1935, and they were the parents of two sons. She preceded him in death on April 8, 1982. Dr. Brusky was a member of the American Medical Association. In 1981 he was inducted into the "Fifty Year Club" of the State Medical Society of Wisconsin. He very much enjoyed his medical practice, although it often meant working 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. six days a week and seeing emergency cases on Sunday, if necessary. His continued willingness to make home calls to sick patients endeared him to many. As a farm boy, Dr. Brusky had no nearby high school to attend, but arrangements were made for him to room and board with an elderly widow while attending East High School in Green Bay. One of his classmates was James Crowley, who later became one of the legendary Four Horsemen of Notre Dame college football fame. In the evenings, after school and on Saturdays he had a job shining shoes and sweeping the floor at a downtown Green Bay barbershop. It was there that by observation he learned how to cut hair Haircuts were 25 cents during the Great Depression when, as a medical student working his way through Marquette, he later recalled a Saturday when he set a Milwaukee record of 85 haircuts in one day. Through his part-time barbering he was able to pay for his room, board, tuition, books and more. Later as an established physician in Green Bay, he happily assisted three siblings, two Sons, a nephew, grandson and several others in their successful pursuits of medical and dental school education. Scholarships at St. Norbert College, Medical College of Wisconskn arid Marquette University will continue to ensure this opportunity for others. Dr. Brusky's interests were varied. He was an antique connoisseur who collected antiques and fine arts for over 40 years. In the 1950s he built up a herd of registered Holstein cattle on a large dairy farm in Seymour The herd was later auctioned to farmers from all over the United States and Central America. An avid golfer, Dr. Brushy was a former member and past president of the Oneida Golf and Country Club. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by brothers Henry, Harry, John, Clemens, Edwin, Sam and Zigmund; a sister, Irene Jacques; and a grandson, Paul Brusky. Survivors include his sons, Dr. John (Joan) and Dr. James (Jeanne), Green Bay; one brother, Dr. Eugene, Green Bay; three sisters, Clara Thibaudeau, Green Bay, Anna Holewinski, Hofa Park, Terry Mertz, Boulder City, Nevada; six grandchildren, David (Katie), Julie, Jeannie, Bonnie (Benjamin), Anne and Susan; four great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Samantha, Lucie and Madeline Rose. Friends may call at Schauer and Schumacher Funeral Home East from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2003. Friends may call at St. Matthew's Church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Matthew's Church on Tuesday, March 18, at 11 a.m. with Father Larry Seidl officiating. Entombment will be in Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. The family would like to thank the staff at Grancare Nursing Home for their care and concern. A special thanks also to Dad's caregivers over the last several years: Donna, Penny, Mary Jo, Susan, Amy, Lori, Chris, Gladys, and lone, a friend. Dr. Brusky once wrote that "I owe much to God" and that "I shall always make contributions to charity, schools, hospitals and monasteries as long as I am alive." In keeping with this spirit of generosity modeled by Dr. Brusky, donations to St. Matthew Church and School, St. Mary's and St. Vincent Hospitals, Bellin College of Nursing and Marquette University or a charity of your choice are suggested in lieu of flowers.
