  Leander G. "Otz" Schabach, 85, Hilbert, died on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, following a short illness. He was born Dec. 7, 1925, son of the late Frank and Theresa (Mueller) Schabach. Leander married Kathryn M. Bechle on June 18, 1946, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Kiel. During his life, he worked for Fromges Bel Cheese Factory in Hilbert. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert, where he proudly ushered for 50 years. Leander's efforts were recognized churchwide when he recently retired from ushering. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus and the Men's Club. In his younger years, Leander enjoyed spending time with friends bowling, but the passion through his whole life was playing Sheepshead. He was ready to play almost anytime and anywhere someone was willing to deal. He also enjoyed gardening vegetables, going so far as to remove Kathryn's flowerbeds just so he had more room for vegetables. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; three children, Ronald (Diane) Schabach, Hilbert; Joan (Lester) Thiel, Appleton; Dennis Schabach, Hilbert; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Grishaber, Appleton; Barbara "Betty" (Clarence) Hemauer, Hilbert; a brother, Roland Schabach and friend, Lucy Vandenberg, Appleton; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Bechle. Leander is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Loretta (Wilber) Beckley; a sister-in-law, Rita Schneider; and three other brothers-in-law, Leo Grishaber, Jerome Bechle and Othmar Bechle. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church (108 S. 6th St.) in Hilbert, with the Rev. Philip Dinh-Van-Thiep officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, and on Tuesday at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. when the service will be held.
