Julie Hooyman, age 94 of Kaukauna, passed away on April 8th, 2016. Julie was born in Stockbridge on September 23, 1921, daughter of the late Nicholas and Magdalene (Diedrich) Karls. She was a graduate of Stockbridge High School and then attended Appleton Beauty Culture School. She worked at Van Abel's of Hollandtown for many years and then the Bank of Kaukauna for 14 years. She married Jerome Van Abel in 1943 in Fort Monroe, Virginia while he was serving in the military. They lived in Hollandtown and had four sons: Daniel, David, Donald and William. Her husband, Jerome and son, Donald passed away in 1963 in an accident. In 1971 she married Marvin Hooyman. They were married for 41 years until Marv's death in 2012. They lived in Kaukauna for many years and then moved to Arizona to enjoy many years of retirement. After Marv passed away she returned to Wisconsin to live at the St. Paul Villa. Survivors include her children-Daniel (Carmen) Van Abel of Potter, David (Donna) Van Abel of Green Valley, AZ and William (Lynn) of Lino Lakes, MN and step-son Gary (Kathy) Hooyman of Kaukauna. Grandchildren-Josh (Cami) Van Abel, Brian (Katie) Van Abel, Eric (Amy) Van Abel, Jamie (Jeff) Brochtrup and Jared (Keri) Hooyman plus ten great-grandchildren. In-laws-Elvera Karls, Mary Sue (Robert) Streck and JoAnn (James) Vandenberg. Preceded in death by her parents Nicholas and Magdalene Karls, first husband Jerome Van Abel, son Donald Van Abel, second husband Marvin Hooyman, brothers-Lloyd (Elvera) and John (Betty) Karls, sisters-Loretta (Raleigh) Strebe, Dell (Jack) Wagner, Margaret (Art) Bauer, Magdelene (Arno) Heller and Lucy (Gilbert) Wieseckel. A memorial mass celebrating Julie's life will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at St. Katharine Drexel - St. Francis Church, 433 County Road CE in Hollandtown. Interment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date. The family will receive relatives and friends directly at the church from 9:00 AM until the service at 11:00 AM. Julie's family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the St. Paul Villa, American Grand, and Heartland Hospice for the special care that allowed her to enjoy her final years. Also, a special thanks to Mary Sue and Bob Streck, JoAnn and Chuck Schumacher, and Gary and Kathy Hooyman for their assistance during her final years. In addition thanks to the many friends that kept in contact to brighten her days. She was a special mother, spouse and friend so she will be greatly missed.
