  LOUIS FRANKE Saturday morning last marked the passing of one of the early pioneers of Eastern Wisconsin, in the death of Louis Franke at his home in Hayton, at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 10 days. Louis Franke was born Oct. 1st, 1841, in Saxon-Weimar, Germany, and came with his parents to this country in 1848, settling in the town of Centerville, Manitowoc County, this state. His young manhood was spent on the farm and after leaving home he worked for several years in the copper district in Upper Michigan. Returning home he was married to Emilie Jaenich and with her established a home of their own in a farm in Centerville. In 1872 his wife died leaving him with four small children, bereft of a mothers care and in 1873 he married for a second time Barbara Mueller, who cared for the little ones and shared his joys and sorrows until death. In 1883 he disposed of his farm in Centerville and came to this county, purchasing the William Nicholson farm, near Hayton railroad Station, which he operated until 1906 when he retired from farm work and came to Chilton where he remained until 1914, then returning to the village of Hayton which has since been his home. Mr. Franke enjoyed fairly good health until some eighteen months ago when he was taken ill and underwent successfully a critical surgical operation which in his advanced age, sapped his strength and slowly s[pent the forces of life until the final dissolution of Saturday. The deceased is survived by a widow and fifteen children, four by his former marriage; Reinhold Franke of the state of Washington, Oscar Franke of Granton, Mrs. Ida Ewert of Unity and Mrs. Emily Klein of Milwaukee; and eleven by the present union, Mrs. Emma Guenther of Chilton, Mrs. Minnie Rathert of Havanna, N. Dakota, Gustave of Marathon City, Mrs. Louise Fiedler of Charlestown, Mrs. Anna Wagner of Granton, George Franke of Park Falls, Mrs. Bertha Wagner of Charlestown, Otto Franke of Park Falls, Mrs. Martha Reisner of Milwaukee, Mrs. Alta Richert of Park Falls and Mrs. Alma Nellessen of Hayton. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Emma Schroedel of Minnesota and a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Chilton Times – August 18, 1917
