  Harriet E. Desens, 84, Appleton, passed away peacefully at Appleton Medical Center April 26, 2007, with her family at her side. She was born to James and Bernice (Stanton) Hurley in the Town of Lebanon on Sept. 7, 1922, Harriet married Victor C. Desens on May 21, 1942, and they would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this year. Harriet was a secretary for her families business, DD Associates for many years. She was very involved in her children's lives as a leader in the Girl and Boy Scouts and the HomeMakers Club. She loved music: playing keyboard, organ and accordion as "Granny's Band" for all family occasions. Harriet also enjoyed sewing, embroidering, cooking, baking, fishing and most of all spending time with her family. Harriet is survived by her loving husband, Victor; children, Marian (Gary) Nielson, Florida; James (Marie) Desens, Grand Chute; Katie (Robert) Hoersch, Grand Chute; Vicki (Rich) Scharschmidt, Green Lake, and Jean (Mark) Heling, Grand Chute; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jerome Hurley, California; and Pat (June) Hurley, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Grace Hurley, South Dakota. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Phyllis (Charley) Wright and Mary Lou (Bill) Westphal; and brother, Bill Hurley. Per family wishes funeral services for Harriet will be private. Memorials may be directed to Appleton Medical Center Foundation for Cardiac Research. The family wishes to thank Gold Cross staff and AMC ER staff for their kindness and compassion, especially Mark — Mom's hero. Mom, you gave us life, taught us to take care of ourselves and others.
