  Earl J. Schmit, Appleton, 80, died unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 30, 2007. He was born on Sept. 8, 1927, in Appleton, the son of the late Robert and Lillian (Koehnke) Schmit. On Sept. 24, 1977, he married the love of his life, Jean Knabenbauer. Earl was a fire inspector for the City of Appleton for 29 years and retired in 1990. He was a faithful member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Neenah and involved in the men's and couple's bible study. Earl enjoyed exercising at the YMCA, loved to golf with his favorite partner, Duane Trams, and enjoyed music. He enjoyed taking care of his yard and spending time in the flower garden and feeding the birds. Earl is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Jean Schmit of Appleton; they were the parents of three foster children; sister-in-law, Agnes Knabenbauer, Kimberly; nieces, Barb Ahrens and Judy (Milo) Burzynski, Appleton; nephew, Gary (Julie) Knabenbauer, New Holstein; great-niece, Dawn (Duane) Trams, Neenah; special friend, Wally Russell, Milwaukee; and his "boys", Mojo and Teddy. He is further survived by his cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Schmit and Lillian Schmit Drall; and his brother, Lloyd Stark. The funeral service for Earl will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at NEW HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1850 American Dr., Neenah, with the Rev. Jeff Prewitt officiating. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 4 p.m. until the time of service.
