  Victor J. Schwantes, age 87, of New Holstein, died Monday, July 14, 2008, at Willowdale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Holstein. He was born August 24, 1920, in the Town of Russell in Sheboygan County, a son of the late John and Amanda (Schmidt) Schwantes. Victor graduated from New Holstein High School. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corp. During World War II, he served in the Aleutian Islands. On May 3, 1947, he married Shirley Criter. The couple was married for 55 years; Shirley preceded him in death on February 7, 2002. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein and the Holy Name Society and was a member of the New Holstein American Legion Post 124. Victor was a mailman in New Holstein all his life. He helped at the New Holstein Firemen's Picnic frying chickens and volunteered at the Salvatorian Center. Victor enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Florida and time at his cottage in Crivitz. He also enjoyed watching high school sports and dancing on Sunday and playing bingo. Survivors include his four children: Jim (Marlene) Schwantes, New Holstein and their children: Doug and Bill (fiancee Rachel), Karen (Steve) Bruckner, Chilton; John (Rhea) Schwantes, Elkhart Lake and their children: Vicki, Peter and Amanda and last but not least Sharon (Val) Thome, Johnsburg and their children: Burt and Becky; three sisters-in-law: Alice Schwantes, Mary Criter and Judy (Frank) Fuhrman and two brothers-in-law: Jerry (Rose) Criter and Irmin (Vi) Criter. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, Shirley; a son-in-law, Sam Peters; two brothers: Al and Claude; a sister, Betty Jane; two sisters-in-law: Merlyn Kennedy and Ruth Schwantes and two brothers-in-law: Donald Criter and John Kennedy. A Memorial Mass will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1724 Madison Street, New Holstein, with Rev. Loren Nys SDS officiating. Military Rites conducted by the New Holstein American Legion Post 124 will follow the Mass. Inurnment will be in the Holy Rosary Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the church on Thursday July 17 from 4-7 p.m. A Memorial Fund will be established in his name. A special "Thank you" to the staff of Willowdale, Willowpark and Dr. Randy Theiler for all their care the last years. The Sippel Funeral Home in New Holstein 920-898-4300 is assisting the family.
