Leary, Daniel Timothy On Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at the age of 61, Daniel Timothy Leary accepted a new position as Director of Human Resources and Career Counseling for the largest and most prestigious company in the universe. The singing voices of his family and the soft strum of a guitar ushered him into heaven, where he believes he will spend his time as a mentor, counselor, and as a whisper in our ears. He spent his time on earth practicing these skills, and only now will be able to perfect them. Dan was born April 23, 1947, to Lona and George Leary in Eau Claire, WI. In 1965, he graduated from Xavier High School in Appleton, WI. Dan enlisted in the U.S. Army serving from 1966 to 1972; he was stationed in Korat, Thailand, and then Houston, Texas, where he served in the ROTC office of the University of Houston. Dan ended his military career as an Administrative Specialist E5. He graduated from UW-Oshkosh in 1973 with a B.S. in Economics and Organizational Development. In 2002, he pursued his dream of vocational counseling by obtaining a M.A. in Counseling from Lakeland College. "Dan the handyman" put his prolific skills to use around the house by always having a list of projects to do. When he was not busy at home, "Captain Dan" was able to pursue his first passion: "wasting time with God" on sailboats. A true "tinkerer," Dan spent as much time rigging lines, sanding, painting and running engine hoses as he did under sail; this was his spiritual retreat. Dan's love for the water was a wonderful gift to his family and friends, they spent numerous weeks nestled under the decks playing Yahtzee, riding out summer storms and many beautiful afternoons under blue skies with calm breezes. Dan was also an active member of the community; he was involved in the Neenah Rotary Club, served as the Senior Warden of the vestry and in other leadership positions at St. Thomas Church, and served on the boards of many local service agencies throughout his career. Dan is survived by his wife of 28 years, Mary; his son, Rusty, and daughter-in-law, Kelly Leary, Appleton WI; daughter, Colleen Leary, Brooklyn, NY; sister, Eileen Mackin, and her husband Thomas, Snellville, GA; twin brother, Michael Leary, and his wife, Barbara, Oconto Falls, WI; also the in-laws: Dory Russell, Green Bay, WI; Peggy and John Simonis, De Pere, WI; Jim and Wendy Russell, Lake Geneva, WI; John and Allison Massey-Russell, Austin, TX; Darlene Leary, Mena-sha, WI; Jim and Gayle Varner, Appleton. WI; as well as many nieces and nephews and numerous used cars and sailboats. Preceding him in death were his parents George and Lona Leary, brother and sister-in-law Marvin and Carol Leary, brother Roy Leary, nephew Brian Leary, and aunt Louella Leary. Dan will be remembered as a loving father, devoted husband, trusted friend, wise counselor, and a man of great discipline and integrity. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in Dan's name. A visitation will be held Friday, October 3, from 4 to 8 p.m., and a memorial service will be held Saturday, October 4, at 10:30 a.m., both at St. Thomas Church, 226 Washington Street, Menasha, WI 54952. "The family extends their thanks and grateful appreciation to all the kind and caring health care professionals at UW-Madison Hospital and Clinics, ThedaCare physicians and nurses and Cherry Meadows Hospice for all their support over the last three years."
