Vertz, Jacob C., Dad, what a beautiful fall day to go home and be with the Angels. The colors and sun were shining on you today as you left on October 12, 2008, at the age of 83. Born on January 6, 1925, to the late Joseph and Clara Vertz, weighing only 1 pounds, warmed by the kitchen's oven. At age 9, Jake and two other siblings became deaf due to scarlet fever. He attended Delevan School for the Deaf. Football and basketball were his school sports but his first love was golf. He played golf through the age of 79, before his CHF kept him from the game. Jake had his first "Hole in One" in May of 1993 at Lake Breeze Golf Course. He had a love for taking care of his lawn, deer hunting in Waupaca, Packers games, and playing cards with his circle of friends. Jacob married his first wife Evelyn Hageman on June 16, 1950; they had their first daughter Mary Ann; Evelyn preceded him in death in 1957. Jacob married his second wife Mildred on September 26, 1959. They had a daughter Valerie Marie; Mildred preceded him in death in 2005. Jacob worked as a welder most of his life, retiring from the Neenah Foundry in December of 1986. Jacob was a member of the Northeastern Deaf Club for many years. Most recently, Jacob resided at Century Oaks/ Crestwood Senior Living. Survivors include his two daughters and their families: Mary and (David) Schmitzer, Neenah, granddaughter, Patti and (Brian) Vogt; and great-granddaughter, McKayla of Winneconne; daughter, Valerie and (Bruce) Ceranske and their three children: Andrew, BreAnne and Alexandria of Waupaca. He is also survived by sisters-in-law: Anna Mae (Vertz) Donny, Marie Vertz, Barbara Vertz, Jessamine Hageman; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth (Lois) Hageman. Many nieces and nephews survive. He was also preceded in death by a sister Jeannette and brothers: Clarence, LeRoy, Leverette and Gabriel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at Martens-Laemmrich Funeral Home, 312 Milwaukee Street, Menasha, with Fr. Richard Allen officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. The Family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Crestwood Senior Living, and also to Katie Kelps and the hospice caretakers of ThedaCare at Home who helped him in his final days. Dad/Grandpa you were the light of our lives. You were a man always full of smiles and laughter. Those who knew you loved you right away because of the way you lit up a room and your sense of humor. Your hugs and kisses will be missed by everyone. We know we were loved with that last kiss. So until we meet again remember you were loved, too.
