  Donald Erskine McLeod, 80, Oconomowoc (formerly of Appleton for 31 years), passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009. He took his last, soft breath at 11:50 p.m., succumbing gracefully and mercifully to Leukemia. He was the adoring husband and soulmate to Ruth (his pet German) for almost 55 years, proud dad of Carol-Lynn (married to Jeff, living in Hartland), Donald Neil (married to Brooke, living in Washington, D.C.), Lezlie-Ann (married to Paul, living in Oconomowoc) and silly Pop-Pop to five grandchildren, Ryan (21), Ian (17), Alec (10), Zoey (3) and Cole (2). He is also survived by his wonderful sister, Sheila Humfrey, and nephew Graeme Humfrey (both living in Montreal) and cousins, Duncan and Elmer MacDonald (living in Ontario, Canada). Don was born on March 6, 1928, in Montreal, Canada. He later received his BSC degree from McGill University in Montreal and his MA degree at the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Don was best known in the Fox Valley as Assistant Principal of Hortonville High School from 1977 to 1991, a job he enjoyed every day. Prior to HHS, Don was Headmaster at Elgin Academy in Elgin, Ill., and University Lake School in Delafield, Wis. He was a true academic leader and teaching was his passion. Hearing a student say, "Thank you for all you've done for me Mr. McLeod", was one of his greatest joys. Upon his retirement in 1991, Don joined the Lamers Bus Lines in Menasha, where he drove Bus #1084 until 2006. This "second career" was equally rewarding as it allowed him to maintain his connection with the students who made his professional life so rewarding. A celebratory memorial service will be held at a later date at Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Although Don, Dad and Pop-Pop are all missed terribly, all who love him are celebrating his life and finding happiness and peace in remembrance and signs that he's watching over us with a great big smile.
