  Hazel C. Liethen, age 93, longtime resident of Appleton, died peacefully on Thursday Feb. 26, 2009, after a short illness. She was born in Manitowoc on April 10, 1915, to James and Elizabeth Chadek. Having graduated from Appleton High School, Hazel attended Lawrence University. She was married to Robert Liethen at St. Joseph Catholic Church in 1941. They enjoyed 47 years together until his death in 1988. Deeply involved in the Appleton community, Hazel served with the American Red Cross for more than 45 years. As a part of her Red Cross affiliation, Hazel did extensive work in programs assisting military servicemen and their families. She served, also, with the Gray Ladies, assisting in regional medical institutions. She was very active in the American Cancer Society, the Appleton Women's Club, the St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary, and participated in various investment groups. She was a past President of the Appleton Lady Elks, served as a state judge of the Elks' Student Scholarship programs and also earned her Real Estate Brokers license. Hazel loved Appleton, championed its people and its past and came to be known as a respected authority on Appleton history. She traveled extensively abroad, was a member of Butte Des Morts Country Club and was an avid Bridge player. A long time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hazel is survived by her two sons: Thomas (Karen) Liethen, Newcastle, Wash.; and Frederic (Dianne) Liethen, Appleton; two granddaughters: Kirsten (Lars) Vestergaard, Portland, and Amy (Brian) Severa, Appleton; and three great grandchildren, Isabel, Matthew, and Adam. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ralph and Gordon Chadek. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 404 W. Lawrence St., Appleton, with Father Larry Abler officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 until the time of service. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
