  Howard Larry Kohler Sr., age 83, of Winchester, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 2, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 16, 1925, in Guttenberg, Iowa, to the late Henry and Leona (Kass) Kohler. During his early childhood, Howard moved with his family to Menasha and was a graduate of Menasha High School. At the age of 17 he enlisted into the Army and joined his four older brothers. He served his country in WWII (European Theater, infantry). He was awarded many medals including two Purple Hearts. While at Wood Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee he met his future wife, Marian Rasmussen, RN. On February 18, 1950, they were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Menasha, where they continued to worship. They were very active members in supporting the church, school and community with services/projects. After moving to Winchester in 1965, he joined the Clayton/Winchester Fire Department. When he became the Fire Chief, he was instrumental in obtaining the Jaws of Life. He was also a charter member of the First Responders and a member of the Larsen/ Winchester Lions Club. He was a volunteer at the Red Cross as a First Aid instructor. After 42 years of employment with James River, he retired in 1987 as head electrician and held office with the United Paperworker's Local 148. He was passionate about singing and devoting time to family and friends, taking trips and especially to Camp LuWiSoMo. He will always be in our hearts and be dearly missed by all who knew him. Howard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marian Kohler; Howard Kohler Jr., Lana (Bruce) Gast, Lee (Candace) Kohler, LuAnn (Randy) Bradley, Karen (Dan) Eake, Carl (Christine) Kohler, Christian (Linda) Kohler, Ronald Sr. (Chrissy) Kohler; 24 grandchildren: Jason, Kristy Kohler, Lori (Eric) Akstulewicz, Kevin (Lynn Ann) Gast, Brian (Jennifer) Gast, Keith, Tammy and Christopher Gast, Anna (Joe) Allen, Ben (Carly) Kohler, Bobbie, Tim Kohler, Stacy (Jeremy) Pasholk, Sarah (Ben) Druecke, David Eake, Jill (Chris) Young, Katie (Ryan) Milske, Carrie (Matt) Lett, Zachary, Adam, Ashley and Alexander Kohler, Ronald Jr., and Marki Kohler; 14 great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Mikayla, and Madison Akstulewicz, Trace, Elijah, Skylar, and Melani Gast, Taylor and Reed Allen, Elise Pasholk, Hayley Ryf, Allyson and Lindsay Young, and Maxwell Milske. He is also survived by a brother, Henry Kohler; one sister, Dorothy (Arden) Eckstein; many beloved brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Along with his parents, Howard was also preceded in death by two sons: Calvin and Roger Kohler; a granddaughter, Megan Bradley; six brothers: Ed, Harold, Elmer, George, Robert and Earl Kohler; four sisters: Clara, Violet, Iola and Mildred; many beloved brothers and sisters-in-law. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 300 Broad St. Menasha, with Pastor Harlan Kopitske officiating. A Visitation will be held on Friday, May 8 at Mueller Funeral Home, Winneconne, from 4 to 8 p.m. where a Tribute to a Veteran service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established. Howard's family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Ramos, Dr. Fehrer, the ThedaCare at Home staff, Pastors Billings and Kopitske.
