  Vaughn Foster Gehrt, 87, of Appleton, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2010, at Brewster Village. He was born September 11, 1922, to Emilie (Semrau) and Edwin Gehrt in Merrill, Wisconsin. After graduation he attended Lincoln County Normal School for two years, and taught in a rural school for three months before entering service. Vaughn served in the Army from 1943 to 1946, being discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and then taught at Jefferson School for two years, and Lincoln School thirty years, both in Appleton. Vaughn was active in the Appleton Education Association, having been Vice-President and President. He was a Docent at the Outagamie County Museum (now The Castle) and volunteered annually for School Days at the Grignon Mansion. He taught Sunday School and was an usher for many years. Vaughn was a member of Merrill's Football Alumni "Silver M" club and later attained the status as a "Golden M" member. Vaughn enjoyed being up north in his woods, planting trees, building up his roads, hunting and fishing. Family camping and taking trips were memorable. He is survived by his wife for 60 years, Esther, along with sons: Ken of Merrill, and Steve of Tomah; and a sister, Glorian Reinke of Merrill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emilie and Edwin Gehrt; brother-in-law, Martin Reinke; aunts, and uncles and cousins. Funeral Services for Vaughn will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 724 E. South River Street, Appleton with the Rev. Stephen Savides officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. The committal service will be held on Monday, July 26, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Merrill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Alzheimer's Association, the Appleton Education Association Foundation, First Congregational Church in Appleton or St. Stephen's Church in Merrill in Vaughn's name.
