  John A. Strathern, 73, Dies at Home here; WAS RAIJLROAD EMPLOYEE FOR HALF CENTURY Veteran Engineer Who Retired In 1930 Will Be Buried On Monday John A . Strathearn , 78,. who re - tired from active service three years ago after 51 years of rail- roading, died Friday night at the home, 507 North Fourth Street, of pernicious anemia. He slept away, being in a coma for 24 hours. After handling the throttle of a North Western locomotive for the last time on the run between here and Two Rivers July 29, 1930, Mr. Strathearn retired to private life, For the past two years he had been in failing health and for two months was confined to his bed. Despite ill health, the deceased insisted on observing Christmas day with his wife and family and one of file features of the observance was a visit of children to the home. They sang Christmas carols to him. Funeral services for the veteran railroad engineer will be held on Monday at 2 p. m. from the Frazier mortuary , Ninth and Chicago streets, in charge of the Rev. C. H. Phipps, pastor of the Presbyterian church of which Mr. Strathearn was a member. Interment will be a t Evergreen . Here In 1918 Mr. Strathearn located in Manitowoc in 1918, coming here from Kaukauna , where e he followed railroading for 30 years. The deceased was born July 4, 1860, at North Prairie, near Waukesha and spent his early life there. He became a fireman on the C. M, and St. Paul road at Milwaukee in 1878 and was promoted to engineer in 1882. He was on the right side of the cab from then until his retirement . After eight years with the St. Paul road Mr. Strathearn transferred to the North Western road and was employed first in Minnesota , later at Milwaukee and from there was transferred to Kaukau - na. For 30 years he ran locomotives out of that terminal and came to this city in 1918, to take a passenger run between this city and Milwaukee. Special Event In the few years just before his retirement, on July 29, 1930, the deceased handled the throttle on the locomotive on the Manitowoc - Two Rivers run . On the day of his final run Mr. Strathearn, with his wife, was made the object of a special ceremony at the North Weste rn depot here. In his 51 years of railroading Mr. Strathearn served under 25 master mechanics and 17 superintendents. Earning the title of John "Dad " Strathearn, the veteran engineer retired to private life on a pensio n in 1930. Mr. Strathearn was married at La Crosse in 1889 to Miss Sophia Nelson, who survive with a daughter, Janet , a teacher a t the Lincoln high school, and a son, John G. Strathearn, also of this city. Mr. Strathearn has one sister, Mrs. George B. McKinley . The deceased was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and also of the Presbyterian church in this city. He was a great lover of children and in his three years of retirement at his home on North Fourth street received numerous calls from those who had learned to know him.
