While Mother [Agnes (Peschong) Loehrer, Mamie's sister] was in Fond du Lac, Wis. going to school a terrible accident happened. Grandma [Elizabeth (Krell) Peschong, Mamie's mother], Grandpa [Bernard Peschong, Mamie's father] and family, Aunt Mae [Mary "Mae" (Krell) Gillman] and Uncle Gilbert Gillman were visiting at Uncle Matt Krell's place. Grandpa, Uncle Gilbert, and Uncle Matt had gone hunting prairie chickens and the women were alone with the children and no telephone. Uncle Matt had some carbolic acid on a shelf in the granary. Mother's sister Mamie, who was two years and two months old, saw it and wanted it as it looked like milk. So Nick Peschong [Mamie's older brother], four years old, climbed up on a high stool and got it. (Uncle Matt had used it for treating chicken cholera -- putting a few drops in the drinking water for the chickens.) Anyway Mamie drank the carbolic acid and was sick immediately. The women were able to get her to vomit by giving her soft lard and milk. They saw a young man driving by and motioned for him to come. His name was Stevens. So he took Grandma, Aunt Mae, and Mamie to Sioux Falls, which was about 15 miles away. The horses ran most of the way. They went to Aunt Mae's house and called a doctor but there wasn't much he could do. Mamie remained conscious and when she saw the baby, who was Anne Parden [Mamie's sister Margaret Anne (Peschong) Parden], crying she said "Ma, take care of the baby." Mamie died in the night. She had long curls and the undertaker cut off a curl and gave it to Grandma [Mamie's mother], which she kept for many years.
      -----------
This story was told by Agnes (Peschong) Loehrer, Mamie's sister, to Agnes's daughter, Evelyn (Loehrer) Pufahl in 1963 or 1964, and all of the relationships in the story are relative to Evelyn. (e.g., "Grandma" is Evelyn's grandmother).
Somewhere along the way, this story has been incorrectly copied, changing a few essential facts, and adding some incorrect details, including the identity of Mamie, the identity of the baby, and the date of the story. The original version of the story is listed above in black with non-original notations made in square brackets in blue. As is clear from the original version of the story above, Mamie is not the same person as Margaret Anne Peschong, and the baby in the story is not Anthony John Peschong.
