  MANITOWOC -- A new trial date has been set in Manitowoc County Circuit Court for an Illinois man whose second-degree negligent homicide conviction was overturned in June by an appellate court. Lawrence Hoffman, 49, Hawthorne Woods, Ill., will be retried the week of Feb. 24. Hoffman was convicted in August 2000 of causing the death of Mark Rickert of Freedom in a boating accident that occurred in June 1999 on Lake Michigan near Two Rivers. Hoffman's 37-foot Sea Ray power boat struck a boat containing Rickert and three of his fishing companions, causing Rickert to drown. Hoffman appealed his conviction to the District II Court of Appeals. That court overturned Hoffman's conviction and ordered a new trial, based upon the fact that Manitowoc County Circuit Judge Daryl Deets failed to read a defense instruction to the jury.
