  Nicholas was a merchant in Gemert. In March, 1850 Nicholas, Maria, a nd their six children boarded the Ship Fuskina (listed in some sourc es as the Ship Triskina) in Rotterdam to set sail for a new life in far away America. On May 25th they arrived at the Port of New York, from whe re they travelled by train and boat through the Great Lakes to the new Sta te of Wisconsin. They arrived at the southern tip of Green Bay, a pa rt of Lake Michigan, where they purchased land and established their farms .
