  Notes	Kate and sister Anne were placed in the care of the Sisters at a covente nt in Bay Settlement, about 12 miles outside Green Bay, Wi. after their mo ther died. Their father couldn't care for the children. He would come pi ck them up on Saturdays and take them home for the weekend. After her fath er remarried, Kate was sent to work on a farm in Holland Town, a farm comm unity about 15 miles south of Green Bay, WI. Kate was not a very strong g irl, the waok was hard - especially rising early in the morning to walk th rough wet fields to bring the cows in. Eventually she became quite ill a nd went back home. She developed inflammatory sheumatism and was bed-ridd en for a year with severe pain. She was 18 years old when she recovere d, and was told by her step-mother to "get out" -- and her clothes were th rown out her upstair bedroom window. She was dating her future husba nd at the time, and went to live with his married sister. She married 8-6 -1900, at 19 years of age. Her stepmother had an "auction" in June of th at year, moving out of the saloon that her deceased husband had on "Thr ee Corners" in Green Bay. Kate's husband took it over for a while.
