  Rod VanderZanden, 85, life-long area resident ; 07/15/03;FOREST GROVE -- Rodrick Earl "Rod" VanderZanden, 85, Forest Grove, died Ju ly 11, 2003, at Marquis Care.A funeral mass was celebrated Monday afternoon at Visitation Catholic Chur ch in Verboort, with Father Scott Vandehey as celebrant. Interment follow ed in Visitation Cemetery. A reception at the Harris Parish Center follow ed and recitation of the rosary was Sunday evening at the church.Mr. VanderZanden was born March 13, 1918, in Forest Grove, a son of Isado re and Bernardina Heesacker VanderZanden. He was raised on the family home stead farm and was educated at Visitation School in Verboort.On Oct. 5, 1939, he married Maxine L. Feldt at Visitation Catholic Chur ch in Verboort. They had lived on the VanderZanden family homestead fa rm in Forest Grove since. They observed their 63rd wedding anniversary last year.Mr. VanderZanden worked for several sawmills in the area, including Carnat ion, Gales Peak and McKay, until he began working at Tektronix in 196 1. He was supervisor of the carpentry crew at Tektronix for 22 years and r etired at age 65. He also farmed 109 acres on the homestead farm.Mr. VanderZanden was a life-long member of Visitation Catholic Church a nd a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the American Associati on of Retired Persons, and a charter member of Forest Grove Elks Lodge 244 0.He also was a member of the National Gopher Association and was kno wn as a master trapper. His business cards read, "Have Traps Will Travel."Mr. VanderZanden enjoyed gardening, flowers, caring for his yard and spend ing time with his family.Survivors include his wife, Maxine L. VanderZanden, Forest Grove; two daug hters and sons-in-law, Susan J. and John Davis, Forest Grove, and Da na M. and Dan Wood, Portland; a son and daughter-in-law, Kerry W. and Elde na VanderZanden, Forest Grove; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Tr oy and Lea Davis, Gaston, TimiSue and Bruce Abbott, Hillsboro, James Vande rZanden, Forest Grove, Erika and Mitch Myrick, Independence, Juston Wood a nd Darren Wood, both of Portland, Dawn and Steve Andresen, Forest Grove, D anielle and Daryl Patrick, LaPine, and Dusty and Angie VanderZanden, Fore st Grove; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by a son, Toby M. VanderZanden, in 1997; a daught er-in-law, Judy VanderZanden, in 1993; five brothers, Fred, Nick, Andy, Cl em and Paul VanderZanden; and two sisters, Theresa Long and Dora Greene.The family suggests memorial contributions to Visitation School Endowme nt Fund, 4247 NW Visitation Road, Forest Grove, OR 97116.Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements
