From: sfrb@earthlink.net Wanasek Family HistoryWanasek (spelled Vanasek in Europe) traces back to the 10th century. T he name Vanasek is a variation of the Bohemian name Vaclav. It is Anglici zed as Wenceslas. It is composed of the elements "Vece" meaning greater a nd "Slav" meaning Glory. It was borne by a 10th century Duke of Bohem ia who fought against a revival of Paganism in his territory. After his d eath, he became the patron saint of Bohemia (Saint Wenceslas of Bohemia ). His feast day is celebrated on September 28th in the Catholic Church.
Saint Wenceslas of Bohemia (Vaclav)In the early 10th century (900's), the ruler of Bohemia "Borivoy" and h is wife Saint Ludmila converted to Christianity. Many Czech families stro ngly opposed the new religion. From the year 915, Duke Borivoy's son "Ratislav" governed the whole count ry of Bohemia. Ratislav married a supposedly Christian woman from the Nor th called Dizahomira. They had two sons Vaclav (Wenceslaus) born in 907 a nd Boleslaus.Saint Ludmila (the grandmother) arranged to be entrusted to raise Vacla v. She raised him in the Christian fashion as she herself was baptized in to.While Vaclav was still young, his father Ratislav was killed fighting agai nst the "Mag Yars". His mother, Drahomira, then ruled the country. She b egan siding with the pagans and ruled in an anti-Christian manner. Sai nt Ludmila, the grandmother, seeing this and knowing it was anti-Christia n, encouraged Vaclav to take control from his mother. Finding this out, t he Nobel's true to his mother (Drahomira), strangled Saint Ludmila in hop es that Drahomira would stay in control. The plan did not work. Nobel 's faithful to Saint Ludmila took control of the country, exiled Dramor ia out of the country, and installed Vaclav as the duke of Bohemia. Th is happen about the year 926. Vaclav ruled in the manner his grandmoth er (St. Ludmila) had raised him. His political policy was to cultivate fr iendly relations with Germany, and he preserved the unity of his count ry by acknowledging King Henry I. As his over-lord, about the year 926, s eeing in him the legitimate successor of Charlemagne. This policy and t he severity with which he checked oppression and other disorders in the no bility lead to unfavorable attitudes of people still opposed to the new re ligion. When young Duke Vaclav married, and had a son, his jealous brother Bolesla us lost his chance of succession, and decided to throw in his lot with t he malcontents. In September of 929, Vaclav was invited by his brother, Boleslau s, to go to Stara Boleslav to celebrate the feast of its patron saints Cos ma and Damian. The day after the feast, friends of Boleslaus killed Vacla v. His people at once proclaimed Vaclav a martyr.Because of the fact that in those days Nobel's and Royalty did not ha ve a coat of arms, none currently exists for our family
