Keating came from Northern Illinois so I ha ve been researching the Keating name there. This is what I have found th at may interest you:1. The Thomas Keating you have in your tree was born in Alden Township, M cHenry County, Illinois in about 1843.2. His parents were Thomas & Margaret Keating - born 1808 and 1810, respe ctively in Ireland. Both spoke Gaelic and were illiterate.3. In addition to Thomas, they had 4 other children - John Thomas(my ance stor) -born 1845, Michael - born 1847, Jeremiah - born 1849, Margaret -bo rn 1859.4. In early census and land records(pre 1870) they used the spelling of C aton or Cating. It could be that the census taker spelled the name phonet ically or it could be the spelling they used. Considering that they could n't read or write either is possible.5. Thomas Keating, Sr. was a farmer and owned a sizable farm in Alden Tow nship. He first arrived in McHenry county in about 1840.6. Sometime in the 1870's Thomas Jr. moved to N. Platte, Nebraska with h is family where he can be found in the 1880 census. The 1880 census has h is children listed - Thomas -17, Ellen -12, John -10, Mary -7, Abigail- 3, Lizzie - 1.7. My g-g- grandfather moved to Big Stone County, Minnesota in the mid 18 60's.8. Thomas Jr. married Ellen Sullivan on 1 November, 1861 in McHenry Count y, Illinois. Early plat maps(1898) of Big Stone County Minnesota have other Keatings th at I've been unable to identify. There is a William H. Keating, M.C. Keat ing, M.T. Keating. I believe some of my g-g- grandfather's nephews mov ed to Minnesota as well. Are they names you recognize?Hope this is helpfu l!
