In 1890, they moved to Pittsburg , Kansas. In 1899 the family moved to South Dakota and in spring of 1904 they moved with seven of their children to St. Peter's Colony (a German Catholic settlement started by the Benedictin Order of St. John's Abbey) in Sookato, Canada as soon as emigration was opened to that spot in Canada. John W. Burton was Reeve of Rural Municipality of Humboldt No. 370 and President of the Humbold Grain Growers Association eight years.
